The Attitude Era saw a tremendous rise in the careers of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. The Rock vs Austin is a rivalry that is evergreen in the minds of WWE fandom.

However, in 1999, The Texas Rattlesnake was out of the game because of a severe neck injury. Johnson feuded with Triple H for several months on major shows at that time. Although they had some splendid matches, The Game has one regret about his rivalry with The Great One.

Recently, Triple H appeared for an interview with the LADBible TV show, SPORTBible Stories. He recalled he had a great time feuding with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in the late 90s and early 2000s. However, he has one regret about their feud never culminating in WrestleMania.

Hunter said, “He becomes The Rock, goes in with The Nation of Domination and I transform into Triple H. We’re coming out of these characters transformed to Triple H DX is formed. We have rivalries over the Intercontinental Title. Then we get into these groups and it’s sort of DX vs The Nation. He and I are battling over the Intercontinental Championship again.”

Triple H added, “And then he full-blown becomes The Rock (and) leaves The Nation. I become Triple H (and) leave DX. We battle over the WWE Championship. Our careers sort of in a way marry each other and are intertwined with each other along the way. We never sort of had that defining WrestleMania moment.”

Prior to becoming the mainstream stars of the Attitude Era, The Cerebral Assassin and The People’s Champion had met before. At that time, we knew them as Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Rocky Maivia.

Helmsley and Maivia both wrestled on several occasions for the Intercontinental Title. However, they altered their characters and reignited their rivalry in 1999 over the WWE title when Stone Cold Steve Austin took a break because of a neck injury.

The rise of Dwayne Johnson in Hollywood canceled The Rock vs Triple H at WrestleMania 31

Triple recalled in the same interview about WWE planning a potential match at WrestleMania 31 between the two stars. Moreover, The Game said it was Johnson who approached him for a match and they even filmed a promo for it on the October 14th, 2014 episode of SmackDown.

However, that never happened, as The Rock had some movies lined up. The Game said, “Somewhere along the time of that year his movie career sort of changed. He (DJ) was like, man I’m not gonna do this. The timing just doesn’t work out and I can’t pass up this other opportunity.”

However, we saw a segment between the two at that year’s WrestleMania, which also included Stephanie McMahon and Ronda Rousey. Triple H wrestled Sting that year and The Rock had an impromptu match at WrestleMania 32 against Erick Rowan. As of now, Johnson has one match left in him, but Hunter retired because of his health issues last year.
