The Anoaʻi family is among the greatest wrestling families in the business. The family has produced legends in each generation who have graced the squared circle. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson referenced this legacy at the WWE WrestleMania XL Kickoff show. Johnson, a third-generation family wrestler, owes his career to his trail-blazing father, Rocky “Soulman” Johnson. Like his father before him, Johnson has left his impact on the wrestling world and continues to do so ahead of WrestleMania XL. So, why is The Rock’s biggest regret related to his father?
Dwayne Johnson’s biggest regret amounted to not reconciling with his father before his passing
During the 1970s and 1980s, Wayde Douglas Bowles, a.k.a. Rocky Johnson, was among the most popular wrestlers in the business. He was NWA’s Georgia Champion and Southern Heavyweight Memphis Champion. Among those, he also won a ton of other titles. The most important being the WWF World Tag Team championship. The importance of this title is that he and Tony Atlas were the first African American tag team to win the title in 1983. Sitting in the audience to watch this historic moment unfold was a young Dwayne Johnson.

Johnson was on Artist Friendly, Episode 62 on Veeps. Talking to Joel Madden, he touched upon his relationship with his father. Johnson has always been open about his complicated relationship with his father in the past. The Rock recounted telling his father about his desire to join pro wrestling, which led to a massive fight. At that time, even his father wasn’t sure about the business, and Johnson didn’t understand that. Nevertheless, The Brahma Bull also had an unfortunate tiff with his father just before his passing. The Hollywood star said, “We got into this huge fight, Christmas 2019. It was awful, one of the biggest fights we ever got into about some just some stupid s**t.” A month after that, on January 15, 2020, his father passed away.

Prior to this, the WWE star said, “I didn’t have the emotional tools to realize like, man, that’s love.” According to The Rock, not understanding why his father was hesitant about him joining the industry drove a wedge between the two. Johnson claims he and his father were not talking when he passed away, and this has been something he regrets to this day. Johnson had posted about his father on Instagram this month, saying, “I regret not reconciling our complicated father/son s— before I lost him.” This clearly shows the guilt the Hollywood star lives with to this day and how dearly, in high regard, he held him.
