In a tweet shared by Michaels on X (formerly Twitter), he shared what the core values behind NXT are. He wrote, “@WWENXT is about supporting and developing our young Superstars while evolving along the way.” Michaels further requested fans to support NXT’s Charlie Dempsey who will be representing WWE at All Japan Pro Wrestling. He then wrote, “I couldn’t ask for a better Superstar to represent #WWENXT. Good luck!!” stating that he is happy with WWE’s decision to send Dempsey.

A few days ago, All Japan Pro Wrestling posted a clip on X showing the president of promotion on a phone call. While details as to who he was talking to were not revealed, it can be assumed that he was talking with either Triple H or WWE’s current CEO, Nick Khan. He was seen saying that the Japanese promotion wants a strong superstar to be their ‘assassin’.
Dempsey’s opponent was set to be announced on December 31, 2023. The current Triple Crown Champion, Katsuhiko Nakajima was set to defend his title against Kento Miyahara. Nakajima triumphed and is now set to face Dempsey on January 3, 2024.
It is a big moment for Shawn Michaels as one of his students is set to represent him in Japan. While the veteran is confident that Dempsey will win the bout, let’s take a deep dive to find out more about the NXT’s ambassador.
Why did Shawn Michaels choose Charlie Dempsey?
While he goes by the ring name Charlie Dempsey, he is real name is Bailey Matthews. Born to the WWE veteran, William Regal, he made his debut at WWE with NXT UK. While initially he was a calm-looking part of the roster, he started to quickly rack up wins against the likes of Josh Morrell and Danny Jones. After a while, fans started to see his dark side when he started to use his grappling skills along with his ruthless attitude.

Following that, he even had encounters with the students of Chase U. This was a path for WWE to develop his heel persona. Dempsey did make a name for himself without being a part of any tables at NXT. This does solidify him as someone who can take on anyone all by himself. This might be the primary reason why Shawn Michaels decided to go with Dempsey. Do you think Dempsey will keep WWE’s name at the All Japan Pro Wrestling?
