Ronda Rousey is one of the most accomplished women in combat sports, having dominated not just MMA, but also pro wrestling. The journey of ‘The Baddest Woman on the Planet’, however, hasn’t been smooth, especially in the WWE. While Rousey was a crowd favorite after her signing with the promotion in 2018, her bond with the fans has weakened over the years. Recently, Rousey also suffered a fractured bond with her closest friend, setting up a clash with her at WWE SummerSlam. According to the 36-year-old, this was always on the cards.

On August 5, Rousey will lock horns with Shayna Baszler, her former best friend-turned-foe. But do you know how and when the relationship soured?

The WWE Universe watched in shock as Shayna Baszler turned on Ronda Rousey at Money In The Bank. The PLE emanated from The O2 Arena in London on July 1. The duo was the reigning Women’s Tag Team Champions at that time. The incident took place during their match against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez.

Baszler’s attack proved costly for the team, as their opponents were crowned the new champions after Morgan pinned Rousey to win the bout. While Baszler’s behavior left many confused, the weeks that followed provided several answers.

In a pre-fight video package by WWE, the former UFC star said she was tired of Rousey keeping her in the shadows. Baszler, who was coached by Rousey in the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter, said while she would be present for the former champion’s sparring sessions, Rousey would never reciprocate.

On the other hand, posting the video package, Rousey said, “This was inevitable”. Her three-word message meant she knew all along this was coming.

Meanwhile, two will be part of a historic match that’ll see a new stipulation being added to a pro wrestling match for the first time. Do you know what it is?

WWE’s new stipulation set to benefit both wrestlers

At Ford Field in Detroit, Rousey and Baszler will fight under the MMA Rules. This means that the match will have no count-outs, pinfalls, or disqualifications. The winner will be decided only by two outcomes- either knockout or submission/tap out. While both the former UFC fighters aren’t strangers to this rule, it will be the first such instance in a pro wrestling match.

Meanwhile, a few weeks ago, Rousey, who has been on the receiving end of fans’ criticism for her lack of mic skills, tore into her opponent by calling her a copy.

At SummerSlam, Baszler’s fans will hope for a befitting reply. On the other hand, Rousey has given WWE a hard-out date, which means she would not be taking part in the promotion any further than the deadline. The SummerSlam match could be her last in the promotion for the foreseeable future.

Does that mean Rousey will lose? Winning will give her bragging rights, but losing will put Baszler over, who plans to continue in the promotion, unlike her opponent. While the results can be speculated at the moment, the final outcome lies in the future.
