WWE often book themselves into a corner with Champion vs Champion matches. Neither man can afford to lose; however, the quality of the match can help in diluting the impact of the loss.
McIntyre vs Reigns is sure to be a barnburner, given how impressive the two have looked. However, both men cannot afford to lose this match. Roman losing would tarnish the heel persona he’s adopted so well.
McIntyre has only just won the WWE Title and suffering such an early loss would harm his legitimacy. This situation is completely different from the times Brock Lesnar represented Raw against AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan. Both Superstars were elevated by Lesnar even though they lost.
In this situation, the wrestler who has lesser riding on him might be the one to take the pinfall. And unfortunately for Raw, that man is Drew McIntyre. The Scottish Psychopath will be the one sacrificed to make the Universal Champion look like the legitimate face of WWE.
Why will Roman Reigns go over?
Roman Reigns has been WWE’s most dominant superstar since returning to WWE. In a span of four months, he has beaten the Fiend and Braun Strowman for the Universal Title, and brutalized his cousin to cement his place atop WWE SmackDown.
Since Roman returned, Drew McIntyre has had a reversal of fortune. He was dominated by Randy Orton, required a bunch of retired legends to beat the Viper, before finally losing the title to Orton at Hell in a Cell.
Orton’s title reign was a damp squib and putting the title back on Drew only restores the confidence WWE had in the Scottish Psychopath. However, WWE have always had faith in their golden child, Roman Reigns.
Roman has been pushed as the face of WWE since 2015. The WWE Universe rejected him as a babyface, so WWE are hoping to ensure that by turning him heel.
Fans have accepted Roman as a heel, and WWE will not relent in its pursuit of making him its representative once again. Reigns even represented WWE at the MTV European Music Awards 2020.

The match at Survivor Series is going to be a battle of equals. Neither men are going to underestimate the other, and will throw the absolute kitchen sink at each other.
In order to have Roman go over, WWE will have to come up with an unclean finish. Jey Uso could get involved in the finish, having already done battle with Drew McIntyre on SmackDown. This seems like the most likely and safest scenario for WWE to go with.
