Roman Reigns refusing a big match—Is he protecting his legacy or just being difficult?

From 2018 until 2020, Roman Reigns had several feuds with other wrestlers. Such feuds were meaningless because they did not elevate or degrade any of the wrestlers involved and were just there to give people more narratives. One of Roman Reigns’ feuds was with Jinder Mahal, as both former World Champions tried to be superior. It appears that during this feud, some plans did not materialize.

Jinder Mahal is currently a free agent after being released from WWE, and it appears that he is now discussing everything that transpired during his career in the promotion. Mahal recently spoke on the podcast Insight with Chris Van Vliet and claimed that during his feud with Roman Reigns in 2018, he had various ideas to make it more exciting, but none of them came to fruition.

Jinder Mahal stated, “Actually, I was supposed to possibly have one with Roman Reigns. At Extreme Rules. I think we just had a regular straight up match and it was in Chicago too. There was talk of that. There was talk of the Punjabi Prison match coming back. Yes, me and Roman in the Punjabi Prison match. And then did he just say, I don’t think so. Yeah. Yeah. Just like Brock.”

The modern Maharaja revealed that he considered holding the iconic Punjabi Prison battle with Reigns to put a stop to their rivalry. However, it seems that Roman Reigns pulled up a Brock Lesnar. The Beast also did not like the idea of having a match with Jinder Mahal and somewhat similar was the case for Reigns too. It does not stop there as the speculations are that Roman Reigns refused to have the whole bout at Extreme Rules.

Roman Reigns might have canceled the entire match for Extreme Rules

Following Mahal’s remark, speculation has begun, and it seems that the feud may be resurfacing. As if the match was supposed to take place at Extreme Rules, it appears Reigns did not cancel just the gimmick match, but maybe the entire bout. As a matter of fact, the whole match after being advertised was canceled during the built-up time.

WWE chose to escalate their conflict because the event card for Extreme Rules was already packed. They did this to ensure that the expected showdown between the two of them received adequate time and attention. Due to that, the match occurred at MITB 2018, where Reigns managed to pick up the win.
