Roman Reigns' return: Is he the true savior of WWE's ratings and popularity?

The main event of SummerSlam ended with a huge surprise. During the Bloodline Rules Match between Cody Rhodes and Solo Sikoa for the Undisputed WWE Championship, The Original Tribal Chief finally made his return. Roman Reigns, absent from WrestleMania 40, returned to attack Solo Sikoa, who became the leader of the “new” Bloodline made up of Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and Jacob Fatu.

Reigns’ return has recorded crazy numbers, with the video of his entry on the scene earning over 100 million views and counting in a matter of hours on all of WWE’s social channels. However, getting massive views wasn’t the only way Reigns helped the Stamford-based promotion with his return. The WWE immediately decided to try to capitalize on the buzz by putting on the market new merchandise dedicated to the Original Tribal Chief as revealed by Booker T.

Less commercial and more linked to a matter of collecting, the WWE created a personalized belt dedicated to Roman Reigns’ legendary championship run. With only 1316 limited edition pieces being made, as a tribute to Reign’s title run of 1316 days, the WWE managed to sell them all out despite the massive price tag of about 600 dollars. A confirmation of how Roman Reigns is one of the greatest draws in the wrestling world.

So on his Hall of Fame podcast, Booker mentioned this craze over the Tribal Chief and how he made WWE $800,000 worth of revenue. He said, “Listen to this. Roman Reigns generated $800,000 worth of revenue for WWE within two hours of his return at SummerSlam. Soon after Roman made his return, WWE announced a new customized belt for sale. It was a Roman Reigns Championship title. WWE only had 1300, 1,316 in the days of his run, each costing $600. All of them were sold within two hours of his return. So, in the math, that’s 800 grand. Hell of a return. I’m serious, man. Hell of a return on the old Roman Reigns getting back in the fold.”

Well, it sure looks like the WWE hit the nail on the head with this return. At least economically. However, from a storyline standpoint, Booker T would like to differ. In the same edition of the podcast, he also revealed why he believes the return of the Tribal Chief was premature, to say the least.

As we mentioned before, during the latest edition of his Hall of Fame podcast, Booker T. had the opportunity to express his opinion on the return of Roman Reigns. The entrance of the Tribal Chief sent the almost 60,000 present at Cleveland Browns Stadium into raptures, but according to the WWE commentator, Reigns’ return came a little too soon.

He said, “Man, I loved it, but I thought it was a little premature, man. I thought Roman could have used a couple more weeks off, you know. But no, I didn’t expect it. It was totally unexpected for me. I did not see that coming. It was a pleasant surprise, though. I’m seeing Roman back in the fold. Now Roman’s playing a different role for the fans, the cheering for him. That’s a little bit different. So I want to see how it play out. But I was excited.” However, Roman Reigns returns eager to redeem himself and regain his position as ‘Tribal Chief’ after a few months, during which the situation in The Bloodline changes a lot. So what do you think of Reigns’ return? Do you agree with the WWE Hall of Famer? Let us know in the comments.
