Did 'stupid fans' really ruin Roman Reigns' babyface run, or was it WWE's poor booking?

Roman Reigns‘ inevitable return has got the entire fanbase abuzz. Although WWE hasn’t announced his return yet, fans hope to see him show up at SummerSlam. Despite being one of the top stars on the roster currently, it wasn’t always this way for him in WWE and Dave Meltzer recently criticized fans for their former views.

He suggested that the reason why The Tribal Chief was not as over among fans during his ‘Top Dog’ gimmick was that the viewers failed to appreciate him, judging his ability to be a leader.

The WWE superstar is rumored to return to SummerSlam. This could give him a huge pop based on how impatient the fans have been with their “We want Roman” chants. But when he was a babyface a few years ago, he didn’t enjoy this privilege. On the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said, “If you’re a good wrestler, you can, you know, have a nice job and do well and be high on the card. But you can’t be the leading man. These fans are too stupid when Roman Reigns was the top guy. These fans are too stupid to get that he’s got to be the top guy. You know what I mean? Don’t you fans get it? And then, you know, the fans reject it.

Fans were rough on Solo Sikoa when he was first left in charge of The Bloodline too. Now, some of them have seemingly found their way around it and are enjoying the storyline. However, it is inevitable that Roman Reigns will be back, and that too, possibly as a baby face.

Could Roman Reigns turn the tides with his latest babyface run?

Back when the former Head of the Table was seen as a ‘babyface’, he wasn’t quite as reputed for his presence as he is now, possibly because of what Dave Meltzer pointed out. Now that he is returning to face Solo Sikoa to take over the throne, he may tackle the situation by becoming a babyface. Some predict that this change may give him a huge pop like never before. However, could that mean that the fanbase may not like it? While that seems a plausible situation, according to the logic that we heard during the WOR, if the audience isn’t ignorant of him, his new gimmick should be fine.

Have an interesting take?

Solo Sikoa recently shared a statement in a promo where he teased his upcoming feud with the Anoa’i elder. He called out his older cousin and threatened him to return to the ring to face him. If Reigns doesn’t acknowledge him, Sikoa has warned him about what could be the result. So, this kind of concludes that we may be moving closer to Roman Reigns’ ultimate return to the Stamford-based company. The date is still not revealed, but SummerSlam is a likely possibility. It’ll soon be unveiled whether WWE is going ahead with a babyface gimmick and if fans will like it.

Do you think the history will repeat itself here?
