In WWE, there hasn’t been an entertainer quite at the level of John Cena. Being consistent and putting over stars that deserve the big platform has always been Cena’s motto ever since he completed everything that could be done in the company. So, it came as a surprise when Cena was announced as the host for WWE Payback.

Along with hosting responsibilities, Cena also took on a lot of other roles at the PLE. One of these roles has got him underwater as a wrestling personality threatened Cena for putting her job at risk.

On Payback we saw Cena as a host, a referee, and even a backstage interviewer. The last one shocked everyone but it came across as Cena having fun with the role. But his fun resulted in fans suggesting that he proved as a threat to existing WWE backstage interviewers.

This got a direct response from none other than WWE’s most recognizable backstage interviewer of this age, Cathy Kelley. Many people may know Kelley from Rhea Ripley’s TikTok or her dramatic love triangle involving Samantha Irvin as well. She responded by saying that if Cena wants the job, he can fight her for it.

However, a fight between Kelley and Cena is not even legible in fantasy booking. Nevertheless, their skills in interviewing personnel could draw comparisons for a critical evaluation. Even if Cena didn’t do this job as well as Kelley, he filled in a lot of shoes at Payback that not many hosts can claim to.

Just last Friday, a day before Payback, his first return to SmackDown, Cena announced that he was going to be the host for Payback. This was big news as Cena’s involvement with WWE has been minimal for a long time now. After the stellar steel cage match between Trish Stratus and Becky Lynch, Cena came out to the ring at Payback.

He said that as a host he needs to be more involved in the PLE and announced himself as the referee for The Miz vs. LA Knight match. While the match was good, it also acted as a glorious moment to sow seeds of a feud between Cena and Knight. His involvement didn’t end there as Cena appeared as the backstage interviewer after Finn Balor and Damien Priest won their tag titles as well.
