The Mysterio family has been in the wrestling business for three generations now. Rey Mysterio Sr. started out as a Mexican pro wrestler. His son, the Rey Mysterio we all know and love, made it big at WWE. Now his son, Dominik Mysterio is setting up to become a prominent heel as part of The Judgment Day faction.

To celebrate this unique wrestling family, an artist in San Diego painted a huge mural honoring the legacy of the Mysterio family. Sadly, however, the mural has been completely painted over in the last few days.

Mural honoring the Mysterio family gets removed 

Rey Mysterio was born in Chula Vista in San Diego County. Dominik Mysterio was also born in the city of San Diego. That makes both father and son a point of pride for San Diegans. This very pride took the form of an enormous mural on a wall in San Diego. The wall at the intersection of Imperial Avenue and 30th Street was chosen for this prestigious mural. The mural artist, Dentlok, whose real name is Daniel Angeles, created the art piece for the San Diego community. It took him almost 5 months of hard work to complete the masterpiece. The community even helped raise money to buy paint for the mural.

The mural contained everything from Rey Mysterio’s iconic finishing move 619, to the word ‘booyaka’ which is part of his theme song. It also included a huge portrayal of Dominik Mysterio and his grandfather. The local community was appreciative of the mural as it celebrated the 3 superstars who brought the county onto the wrestling map.

However, the business that owned the wall on which the mural was painted went up for sale. This worried Angeles about the future of the mural. So when he went to try and talk to the new owner, he realized the mural had already been removed. There was no warning sent by the new business, hence the removal of the mural completely blindsided him. After the older Mysterio lost the United States Championship at Crown Jewel, this came as another shocker for Mysterio fans.

But is there any law in place for the covering up of such iconic murals?

The California Arts Protection Act was specially made for such incidents

While it might be too late for the Mysterio mural, as it has been completely erased, this might not be the same for others. Angeles wants to take the opportunity to make other mural artists aware of their rights.

While talking to CBS8, Angeles said, “It’s called the CAPA, the California Arts Protection Act, and what that dictates is that an owner can’t destroy murals without going through the procedures of reaching out to the artist and coming on to an agreement where both can be happy”.
