A part of the WWE Universe has been longing for a match between Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock, and his cousin Roman Reigns for some time now. The demands started to wane after WrestleMania 39, where, despite being rumored to face The Great One, the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion defended his title against Cody Rhodes. However, voices have grown stronger again after Johnson’s recent revelation.

Just hours before he blew the roof off over the Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, with a surprise appearance on the September 15 episode of SmackDown, Johnson dropped a bomb. He said the rumored match was actually locked. Following that, Johnson dropped another bomb when he said he was open to fighting The Big Dog at the upcoming WrestleMania. Since then, many experts and fans alike have commented on the possibilities. Now a WCW legend has weighed in on the matter.

Pro wrestling legend Kevin Sullivan discussed the rumored match and its possibilities on his Tuesday with The Taskmaster podcast recently. The 73-year-old, who had a long tenure with WCW from 1994 to 2001, sounded excited about the fixture.

Sullivan urged the promotion to get WWE Hall of Famers as a special guest referee for the match. “If you put a special referee like Austin or Mike Tyson or even one of the elders from The Tribal Chief’s, there’s so many ways you could do it,” he said. The Taskmaster said getting Stone Cold Steve Austin or an original faction’s members would be the “cherry on the cake”.

He also advised the WWE to put the icon and the superstar in a tag team match on night one. Sullivan said if not a lot of people like those, it’ll create a platform for day two of WrestleMania 40.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s WrestleMania 40 revelation has left many with one question – how will the WWE set up the match?

Possible setup for Johnson vs. Reigns bout at WrestleMania 40

Though it sounds a bit far-fetched, the best scenario at the moment is a triple-threat match involving Cody Rhodes.

Now, you may ask why? Well, after his defeat at the SoFi stadium against Reigns, Rhodes has grown leaps and bounds as one of the biggest baby faces. He has defeated Brock Lesnar in a three-match series in three PLEs and won the respect of The Beast Incarnate. The American Nightmare, who used his clout to get Jey Uso to come back to RAW, is now ready to resume his rivalry with Reigns in hopes of finishing his story.

With Johnson’s admission a spanner in the works for Rhodes, he has no choice but to take on the cousins. Johnson has already chosen his brand – SmackDown, which is Reigns’ kingdom. On the other hand, Rhodes teased a return to the blue brand during his promo on RAW.

So, with all three converging in the same direction, expect a clash. There are still over six months left for The Showcase of the Immortals and Triple H could cook a story involving the three at WrestleMania 40.

While this could divide opinions, many would also love to see WWE following its unwritten tradition – have a triple threat match as a main event at the start of a new tenth WrestleMania. WrestleMania 20 had Chris Benoit vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels. Ten years later, WrestleMania 30 had Daniel Bryan vs Batista vs Randy Orton. And now we’re awaiting WrestleMania 40.
