Ever since he returned to the WWE, CM Punk is all anyone can ever talk about. So much so that fans have started seeing him as the next flag bearer of the Stamford-based company. His pull is so big that even critics feel that the company could plan something big for The Second City Saint, especially with WrestleMania 40 closing in fast.

Well, it is being speculated that Punk could ultimately start a storyline with either Seth Rollins or Roman Reigns, which will conclude WrestleMania 40. But it seems that his chances to face Seth Rollins could be greater than facing Reigns at the biggest WWE event. But why is that?

Seth Rollins’ tensions with CM Punk can build a storyline in WWE

Seth Rollins’ disdain for Punk is not hidden from the WWE universe. On the contrary, Rollins has been very overt about his hatred for Punk. The current World Heavyweight Champion recently hit out at Punk when he made his startling return last Saturday. Following the return of the former AEW champion, Rollins was seen yelling at him while flipping him off, and the situation seemed tense. So much so that commentators Cory Graves and Michael Cole tried to calm things down.

Reports suggest that everything was planned since Rollins knew that Punk was about to return. While it did seem extreme, Rollins was probably trying to clue in fans about a prospective feud with Punk. Compared to Reigns, who hasn’t so much as acknowledged Punk, this suggests the possible route that Punk will likely take. Possibly ending in an all out brawl at WrestleMania 40. If this is not enough to speculate about their feud, as mentioned before, Rollins has been overt about his hatred for Punk, and he’s said as much in the past.

No matter what, Rollins has never been afraid of speaking his mind. Opposed to being on the fence, Rollins once called the controversial star “cancer”. His January interview with Wrestling Inc. laid bare his true feelings for Punk. When he was asked if he would like to see the return of Punk anytime soon, Rollins simply warned him to stay away. Well, this anecdote could also be highlighted by the creative team to spark WrestleMania-level beef between the two bigwigs. Ironically, Rollins also revealed that Punk helped him in his career. So we have to wait and watch to see what plans the WWE makes.

Cody Rhodes has more of a chance than CM Punk of facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania

We still think of Cody Rhodes when discussing the guy who could end the reign of terror perpetuated by Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. Rhodes only focused on his career development in the independent circuit after quitting the WWE in 2016. Additionally, he followed the same in AEW. When he returned to the WWE, he was quite explicit about his desire to be the company’s champion wrestler.

Despite losing to Reigns at WrestleMania, it is still believed that Rhodes could come back even stronger at WrestleMania 40, which could be the last day of the historic championship run of The Tribal Chief. Even the staredown that happened a few weeks ago on SmackDown suggests that another feud is in the making.

Considering Rhodes’ years of hard work, he could stand toe to toe against Reigns. Even though it is rumored that Punk is planning to face Reigns, Rhodes is still a number one choice. However, Reigns could potentially face Punk after Rhodes ends the story at Mania, but maybe not so much before or during. This certainly means that Punk’s shocking return won’t put him against Reigns any time soon.

Punk has never witnessed a WrestleMania moment

CM Punk was indeed one of the biggest aspects of the WWE. But despite that stature, the coveted spotlight of headlining WrestleMania has eluded him. Even though his no-nonsense attitude and blunt persona helped him reach the frontlines, Punk never got a chance to witness a WrestleMania moment in his career. This is all despite the fact that Punk is a five-time WWE champion and has had a historic 434-day reign as a champion.

Months after leaving the company in 2014, Punk revealed that the creative decision of the company to book him was not ideal from his perspective. He even said that he was not happy with the company booking him to end his historic reign as the WWE Champion against The Rock at Royal Rumble. According to him, ending that run at WrestleMania would have done justice to his achievement.

Moreover, the yearning among fans to see CM Punk triumphant in a WrestleMania headliner is a collective sentiment. Thus, it is also the fans who want to see the Chicago native enjoy his WrestleMania moment. So it is high time for Punk to get that coveted spot and fight Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship. And since Rhodes might go against Reigns, Punk could headline the first night of the event against Rollins.
