Vince McMahon is arguably one of the most competitive persons in sports entertainment. His desire to be at the top had contributed to WWE’s success. Vinnie Mac knows what’s best for business and desires nothing less than the numero uno spot. Even when it comes to the way people refer to him. McMahon just didn’t like being second.

According to Paul Heyman, one of his prominent collaborators, 77-year-old McMahon would get upset if others got a part of his name wrong.

What’s in a name? Everything, if you’re Vince McMahon

Vince McMahon is not the only person from his family to dabble in pro-wrestling. His wife- Linda, son- Shane, daughter- Stephanie, and son-in-law- Triple H have all had a contribution in the business. However, it was Vincent James McMahon or Vince Sr. who set the ball rolling. Since both father and son share the same first name- Vince, the younger one would be referred to as Vince Jr.

This, according to Heyman, was a big turn-off for his former boss.

“‘My father is Vincent James McMahon, I’m Vincent Kennedy McMahon. I’m not a junior. My middle name is different.’,” the 57-year-old manager told Rick Rubin on the Tetragrammaton podcast recently when talking about McMahon’s preference when it comes to his name. Heyman also tried to ape McMahon’s deep voice. McMahon’s fascination is backed by logic though, which is also deeply philosophical.

“‘It makes you less then. You’re automatically second. I don’t like that. I go for firsts. I promote firsts.’,” Heyman revealed the 77-year-old’s thoughts behind it.

Well, the part of the name is not the only thing that has gotten a thumbs down from Vinnie Mac. Heyman also revealed another instance when McMahon weighed in on the use of a name.

McMahon once chided Paul Heyman regarding the use of a name

Heyman has been instrumental in the meteoric rise of Brock Lesnar in pro wrestling. He was attached to The Beast Incarnate since his ‘next big thing’ phase in the main roster. Lesnar was the youngest guy to win a championship in the promotion and the second fastest since his debut, after Ric Flair.

He was rightly introduced by Heyman once as “The Next Big Thing”. This name, however, wasn’t initially liked by McMahon. After the 57-year-old cut a promo by referring to Lesnar with the aforementioned moniker, McMahon revealed what he thought of it. “‘What did you call him?’ I said, ‘I called him the next big thing. Brock Lesnar’ and he said, ‘That’s terrible. Why would you call him that?’,” Heyman recalled.

No counter from Heyman worked as his then-boss kept on chiding him. Fortunately for the manager, the name struck a chord with the WWE Universe and there were posters carrying the same. Lesnar has come a long way though. He is currently one of the biggest ‘things’ in the promotion and draws the fattest check.
