Pat McAfee's wild ESPN night—Is this the real reason for his WWE hiatus?

Just a few days have passed since Pat McAfee left the WWE building temporarily to focus on his other priorities (such as ongoing college weekly game shows and NFL programming.) But things started to shape out differently for the veteran commentator. In the last couple of hours, McAfee reached the top trending list on Twitter, and not for a very decent reason.

McAfee, 37, messed it up in a Dublin pub show and got the internet laughing uncontrollably. The all-sports media person was intoxicated while doing an ESPN show on Friday and immediately rose to the headlines, making a few hilarious comments and gestures live on camera.

You may love him or throw shades at him, but either of these won’t change the fact that he produced some of the generational moments of fun and quirk on social media as a panelist on College GameDay last season. The college football season hasn’t yet kicked off officially, but the college GameDay crew touched down in Dublin, Ireland, in advance to cover the Florida State-Georgia Tech game with ease. But McAfee and his chilling accompaniers couldn’t care less about their impending assignments, as they were seen having their moments of cheer and delight while chugging beers. However, it looked like the WWE commentator had a bit too much of it.

Things went off the rail when McAfee started to chant a befuddled poem for the fans, ”We’re chugging beers. We’re already drunk. American Football has become a dream. Everybody in here is a part of our team.”

After enough of the banter, McAfee suddenly got up and started to shake his legs with Miss Terry, the wife of Nick Saban.

The drinking spree continued despite the host having a rare moment of realization they should not be on TV. McAfee tore apart Sheamus in his tipsy speech, saying he’s facing karma for putting the WWE star to bed. After confessing that he was up to ‘maybe 10 beers deep’, the blear-eyed sports icon tried to wrap up the show before it switched over to SportsCenter.

Moving ahead, let’s look at McAfee’s potential WWE return date and role.

Will Pat McAfee ever return to the WWE ring?

In a post-farewell speech on Raw, the prized commentator noted that he will revert by January 2025, especially on the first Netflix-sponsored red brand show, and bring all his essence back to the company and the fans. But will the sports fanatic only be confined to his commentary table role, or he will have some shots inside the ring as well?

Answering this question in a recent interview, McAfee brought up his experience at WWE SummerSlam 2022. Although he was able to defeat Baron Corbin in a full-fledged match, the deal was risky. The commentator noted at one point in time he felt like he was dying and could only see referee Charles Robinson in front of his eyes. This can reoccur at any moment, so he is better off staying away from it.

However, it will be interesting to see what effects this fun drunken ESPN show will have on his career going forward.
