Wrestlers often take on different gimmicks throughout their entire careers. Sometimes they even have to switch roles drastically. This can include a wrestler switching to a backstage role as well. Although some prefer these roles for themselves, others may not be much fond of the change and LA Knight is the perfect example of such an individual.

In an interview, with the Daily Mail, Knight revealed that WWE had an alternate plan for his career. Interestingly enough, the 40-year-old wrestler did not appreciate what the management had in store for him. Now, he recalls the time when he almost had a career shift, forever altering his screen time.

Whenever we talk about a wrestler’s professional health, we often take a look at their age. This is because pro wrestling is a sport that requires a good fitness level and increasing age can hinder a lot of possibilities for a wrestler. Although it’s not always the case with all wrestlers, WWE probably generalizes the situation to ensure the quality of their content.

So, considering Knight’s age of 39 last year, the management decided to repackage him as ‘Max Dupri’, the manager of Ma.çé and Mån.sôör on SmackDown.

After a switch in management, Dupri again became the LA Knight, which was his gimmick in NXT. Now, he is a popularly growing wrestler in the promotion.

Recalling WWE’s plans for him, Knight told Daily Mail, “The age thing comes up – [whispers] ‘Oh no, he’s 40, danger’. But I’m not the average 40-year-old. I haven’t gone through the ringer. I haven’t had a bunch of surgeries or injuries. Knock on that wood. I’ve lived a good, youthful life in a certain sense and I’ve taken care of myself in a way I would say most don’t.

It’s pretty clear that Knight wants to lay it out there that he has taken good care of himself, unlike several other wrestlers his age.

Does ‘age’ really matter for WWE stars?

As you must’ve read above, WWE could be generalizing their wrestlers on the basis of age to ensure the quality of the matches. However, that doesn’t mean that a wrestling star can’t achieve what he has set out to. The top WWE star is being asked to look up to the wrestling legend Diamond Dallas Page because of how people call him out for his age. The reason behind this lies in DDP’s incredible achievements even though he started late in the business.

The reason why people would be considered an inspiration is because the legendary wrestler began his training at the age of 35. And only eight years later, DDP was able to win his first world championship in WCW at the age of 43.

So, it could turn out to be a good decision to let LA Knight have some fun in the ring.
