Recently, appearing on the Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast, WWE Hall of Fame tag team The Bushwhackers recalled their first meetup with Vince McMahon. They wanted to prove to Mr. McMahon that they can make money just like babyfaces as the former CEO wanted.
One half of The Bushwhacker, Butch, said, “Once we get escorted into the office and we sit down and we’ve never met him before, he’s never met us. So, we shook his hands, and he says, guys, I tell you what he says. I would love to have you guys on board. But I’m thinking about bringing you guys in as baby faces.”
Butch and Luke looked at each other and pitched McMahon about introducing as heels and then turning them babyface. However, the former CEO had a different idea and wanted them directly as babyfaces in WWE. However, listening to that, Butch did something unusual that nobody would expect.
Butch said, “So I jumped on his office bench, on my hands and knees, and I went straight over to him and I gave him a YAY! And I said, ‘Vince, take a look at these faces.’ And we did the old, the old, uh, Sheepherder/Bushwacker look. And I said, ‘if you think you can make money with these two face. I’m in 100%.'”
Luke recalled McMahon saying both to look at that time’s top babyfaces, after listening Butch’s comments. The former CEO named Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and said they weren’t the prettiest but are making huge money in the business.
The Bushwhackers were top heels before they got a call from Vince McMahon
In the same interview, while speaking about their meeting with Vince McMahon, the Hall of Famers talked about their careers before WWE. They recalled being the top heels at NWA.
Luke said, “We were working with the Rock N’ Roll Express in NWA and they were the hottest babyface tag team. We just had an angle with Lex Luger and Barry Windham. We get the phone call.”
