As a little kid, Austin Theory grew up watching John Cena, as his hero. But now he wants to beat him on The Grandest Stage of Them All. He used to have immense respect for the Leader of Cenation. But now he only wants to embarrass the 16-time Champion at their upcoming clash at WrestleMania 39.

Growing up, Theory dreamed of walking in Cena’s footsteps. He wanted to be known as the “next John Cena.” But now, his dream has changed. Now, the one goal that motivates the current United States Champion is to have his own distinctive status in the Stamford-based company.

What made Austin Theory change his dream?

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on his show, the 2022 Men’s Money in the Bank Winner discussed his upcoming match against The Champ at WrestleMania Goes Hollywood. He also told the fans what made him realize he doesn’t want to be known as the “second John Cena.” 

Theory stated that he grew up idolizing The Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect Soldier. But as he grew up, he realized Cena was not the one who helped him reach where he is right now. He said, I guess just growing up. Just not being a kid anymore and it’s funny too that you mentioned attitude because the attitude has certainly changed.”

He added that all the success he has achieved today is because of himself. “When I realized as a kid every day I went to the gym and worked on this dream and every little thing in between that I did to work on this dream, John Cena was never next to me. He was never standing there inspiring me. It was me,” Theory elucidated.

Despite his critics believing otherwise, the current United States Champion believes he deserves to have his own name in the pro wrestling business because he has put in the work for it.

In the end, he mentioned he doesn’t want Cena’s status overshadowing his. In addition, he expressed his desire that in the future he wants the WWE Universe to remember him as the first Austin Theory.”
