When you think of the biggest, most recognized names in the WWE, you think of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The movie star and global icon is one of the biggest stars the WWE has ever produced. However, thanks to his ventures into entrepreneurship, he’s made himself even bigger. But can you call The Rock the biggest star on the planet? Dave Meltzer doesn’t think so.

With Johnson returning to the WWE and taking up a heel angle after so long, fans have started calling him ‘the biggest star’ on the planet. This seems to not sit well with Meltzer.

When it comes to WWE, many fans believe every word sports journalist Dave Meltzer says. Since 1983, he’s been the voice of the Wrestling Observer and is the go-to source for insightful analysis of the WWE. A large population of the WWE Universe religiously follows his podcasts and social media. This has led to some really interesting quotes by the man.

On his recent podcast, he covered Johnson turning heel and facing Cody Rhodes at the WrestleMania XL Kickoff show. During this time, he began discussing the legitimacy of Johnson’s being the ‘biggest star’ status. Meltzer said, “Dwayne, I know he’s a big movie star and everything. He is not a bigger star than Taylor Swift. No fricking way.” While comparing Johnson to Swift can be considered on point, Swift has a much larger fan following than The Rock.

He backed up his statement by saying, “He can’t go to Wembley Stadium and do anything and sell out show after show after show with $1,000 tickets.” Swift is known to sell out every stadium and arena she performs in regardless of the ticket price. This is something Meltzer believes Johnson cannot do and with good reason. He talked about the Kickoff show in Las Vegas and claimed that only 3,000 people attended that show. But has the Hollywood star lost his mainstream appeal?

Has Johnson lost his fan following over the years?

There is no doubt that The Rock is a Hollywood megastar. However, despite his ventures into the XFL, sports drinks, and clothing, his popularity isn’t as big as people think. While he appears in several Hollywood movies, he hasn’t been that successful. With several flops on his hand, the majority of projects are produced by his own production house.

When it comes to the WWE, his absence from the product, along with his current age, has left fans with a low bar of expectation. While the heel angle is something they are excited about, fans know he cannot perform as he once did. Furthermore, Hollywood is The Rock’s main priority now, not the WWE.
