In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, the WWE Hall of Famer opened up about one particular catchphrase that has led to a fair share of rumors and misconceptions. The interviewer asked, “Oh this happened with Hulk Hogan in TNA or WCW it’s like we don’t know if that actually happened or not?”

Hogan replied, “If I knew the individual stories I could tell you the truth whether it happened. But that was my…. my catchphrase that doesn’t work for me, brother.”

The catchphrase, “That doesn’t work for me, brother,” was more than just a catchy saying; it became an essential part of Hulk Hogan’s wrestling persona. Hogan recalled, “You know like there were several times when Ric Flair and I were traveling and we do like the Maple Leaf Gardens the main event.” These big shows were pivotal moments in wrestling history, and fans still remember them fondly.

“And then there’d be like Brandford Ontario which I would always make the double shot but every once in a while I had other stuff to do” Hogan explained. In wrestling lingo, a “double shot” typically means performing at two events in a single day, a grueling feat for any wrestler. However, Hogan had other commitments that occasionally prevented him from making that double shot.

“Yeah, so I’d say Ric take my car you know jump back on the plane because that doesn’t work for me brother. But that was my go-to line,” Hogan revealed. It was in these moments of honest practicality that the catchphrase was used a lot.

Hogan’s catchphrase may have been famous, but it eventually became a double-edged sword. Rumors and misconceptions began to swirl around him, turning his iconic line into a source of comedic punchlines in the wrestling world.

The catchphrase that came back to haunt Hogan

In professional wrestling, the phrase, “That doesn’t work for me, brother,” has become a comedic punchline cherished by fans. In wrestling lingo, it’s a timeless tactic to avoid doing something you’d rather not do, no matter what. This catchphrase finds its roots in a pivotal moment during Hogan’s match with Sting at Starrcade in 1997. WCW had unchecked egos undermine its biggest event.

As per reports, the story behind this infamous phrase unfolds as Hulk Hogan decides something shortly before the match. Hogan feared that losing to a less-than-prime Sting would damage his own image.

However, numerous rumors suggest that this catchphrase is often associated with Hogan’s backstage political maneuvering. According to speculation, he was known for not fulfilling his “job” adequately and consistently pushing for wins. This in turn hinders the progress of younger talent.

As a result, Hogan allegedly sought to alter the planned finish, attempting to create the illusion that Sting hadn’t defeated him fairly. Not only did this ruin Sting’s big moment but this maneuver compromised the integrity of WCW in the eyes of fans.
