James Gunn’s Peacemaker was a pleasant surprise for DC fans. The show starring John Cena in the title role emerged as a breath of fresh air. With an overall 90+ approval rating from critics and fans, it made a bold statement with its first season. Now with the DCU under Gunn’s leadership, fans of the show have good news to look forward to.

The show is based on Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie released in 2021. The soft reboot/sequel to the 2016 movie was a massive success with the likes of Cena, Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, etc. playing pivotal roles in the movie.

Before James Gunn’s involvement in the DC Extended Universe, things were a mess. Movies did not receive a rousing reception and the competition to keep up with Marvel’s success emerged as a daunting task. However, after the success of 2021’s Suicide Squad movie, Warner Bros made Gunn the head of the new DCU. The success of the first season of the show has led to the beginning of pre-production of the second season. According to a new report, pre-production has gone well with Gunn finishing writing around 7-8 episodes of the upcoming season.

As Gunn took hold of the DC characters and their shared universe, he revised what needed to be done. Starting with a clean slate for movies and TV shows, many actors knew they were not going to transition from the DCEU to the DCU. After directing the SS and making the standalone Peacemaker season 1, Gunn was happy to announce Cena would survive on his DC revamp journey.

The first season of Peacemaker was met with positive reviews from critics and fans loved the light-hearted yet mature outlook on the character. Cena was praised for his portrayal and everyone wanted a season 2. With news emerging of Gunn’s development of the writing process for the new season, fans can anticipate key details to trickle in sooner rather than later. With 7/8 episodes being ready, filming could begin in the middle of this year. This comes as great news for Peacemaker fans, especially as the cinematic universe ushers in a new dawn. But how exactly will differ from its predecessor??

How the DCU will be different from the DCEU?

Many DC fans have been questioning how James Gunn will introduce the DCU with Peacemaker season 2 since it belongs to the DCEU. However, to answer fans’ question, Gunn said, “Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year — a sort of aperitif to the DCU — & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that.”

Gunn also stated that “Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller, and John Cena will Peacemaker.” This hints at Gunn’s trust and belief in Cena’s portrayal of the character to be what he always wanted to see.
