Hogan is also one of the few superstars who have admitted to taking drugs in the past. However, his run-in with the federal government took place after it was made illegal to take certain substances. Hogan, who was a guest on Von’s This Past Weekend podcast, said everyone he knew took steroids.

“…When it became illegal, we kept yoking up, because we were out tearing biceps like this that wouldn’t get fixed and muscle tears everywhere.” Hogan said the trouble started when people didn’t stop even after it was barred from usage.

He said McMahon was also targeted by the federal government as his promotion was “doing great”. “They targeted him and they dragged the poster boy in. It was almost gonna go for Vince, let’s get Hogan,” he said.

Hogan, who became the poster boy of the WWE in the 80s, enjoyed a golden run during the era. His four-year reign ended in 1998. Five years later, Hogan admitted to using steroids during an interview with Los Angeles Times. A year later, McMahon stood trial after the US government accused him of supplying steroids to pro wrestlers.

Reminiscing about the time, Hogan said, “…we had a rough go of it for a few years with the federal government.”

Meanwhile, Hogan also spoke about Vince McMahon’s role in the issue. He revealed what Vinnie Mac had done that made him stand trial.

Was Vince McMahon guilty? Hulk Hogan shares his take

Hogan and McMahon have had a bittersweet relationship over the years. While Hogan also worked under McMahon’s father, Vince Sr, it was with the WWE owner that he forged a bond. While they have had their disagreements over the years, forcing Hogan to quit the promotions several times, he deems McMahon not guilty of this particular charge.

“He didn’t distribute it, he didn’t sell it,” Hogan said, taking a stand against what the US government has charged McMahon with. “You did it on your own,” he added.

“So that’s what they were trying to paint him in the corner. It wasn’t true,” Hulk Hogan stated. Following the trial, McMahon was found not guilty in July 1994.

WWE has since then taken various measures against the use of drugs. WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam’s career was cut short after he was arrested for carrying banned substances during the height of his career. The double champion was stripped of his belts in a matter of 24 hours and his push was derailed.
