Kurt Angle and Stone Cold Steve Austin both played big roles in WWE. However, Stone Cold was cheered by the fans for doing things that usually a heel does.
As everyone knows, every WWE storyline has a hero (babyface) and a villain (heel). However, there are times when a Superstar arrives at the company, and plays a supposed heel but is loved by the WWE Universe. This is exactly what happened with The Texas Rattlesnake.

Speaking on The Kurt Angle Show, Angle revealed why the audience cheered for The Texas Rattlesnake even when his actions aligned with that of a heel.
“They were cheering for the bad guys. Yes. I mean, Stone Cold Steve Austin is a perfect example of someone that was supposed to be a heel and he was a babyface. I think the reason why is because he was a rebel. You know, he drank beer.”
“He flipped off his boss. You know, he had an attitude. Those to me mean that you’re heel. So. But, things changed in wrestling, especially in the mid-90s. The Attitude Era changed everything. I would say a generation or two earlier, I would have been the top babyface in the company.”H/t The Kurt Angle Show.
But, if one was to put a label on the type of character Stone Cold Steve Austin played in WWE, it wouldn’t be fair to term it as babyface or heel. It was somewhere in-between, an anti-hero if one may.
Stone Cold Steve Austin could possibly return to WWE
It’s been a while since The Texas Rattlesnake came to town. Undoubtedly, the WWE Universe will always want him to come back. So, WWE may make it happen at the upcoming WrestleMania event.
According to reports, WWE is planning something which would have Stone Cold Steve Austin grace WrestleMania 38 with his presence. However, his role remains unknown.

While reports state it won’t be in a wrestling role, nothing says he won’t execute The Stunner on someone. There are plenty of Superstars who would voluntarily stand in the ring to have The Stunner executed on them!
Talked to a few different source this weekend & heard the same thing, WWE is very interested in having Steve Austin as a part of WrestleMania this year in Dallas. Not in a wrestling role, but a meaningful part of the event outside of just appearing. Up to creative at this point.
