WWE is one company where nothing will happen without the bosses and stars knowing about it. In such a big company, any unknown factor can cause a big disaster, therefore there is a strict code of conduct when the cameras are rolling. But this doesn’t mean that there have never been instances where big stars flipped the script and did something on their own. One such name who can move away from the directions of the creative especially while holding a mic is John Cena.

WWE usually comes down hard on such actions. But it was let go as the action led the feud between Cena and Dwayne Johnson to become more personal and lent it authenticity.

The Ringer Wrestling Show invited the legendary WWE writer, Brian Gewirtz to their show to talk about the modern wrestling landscape. From the differences between his time and now to LA Knight and The Rock, they went over a lot of topics. But one question had Gewirtz taken aback at first. The question was if any wrestler had ever shocked him on live TV.

He recalled that there was one instance in 2012, “I’d say the closest thing would be the whole Rock Cena thing, where Cena came out and did not tell me or anyone that he had made up an ‘I Bring It Via Satellite’ t-shirt live on the air. Then he was nice enough to roll it into a ball and just fling it in my face as hard as he could when he got back to the curtain. But that was kind of like we’re in a war or shoot, or whatever. You gotta do what you gotta do.

This wasn’t the only time Cena went off-script in his heated promos with The Rock. During an episode of RAW, he called out The Brahma Bull for writing his promos on his wrist, visibly infuriating him. The two stars eventually traded one win each at consecutive WrestleMania.

But these few instances were the gist that solidified the feud between Cena and Johnson.

What made John Cena’s feud with The Rock iconic in hindsight?

Something that many overlook is the hypocrisy of the feud between Cena and Johnson. Just a few years after this feud, Cena would also become the same part-timer that he criticized Johnson for being.

This also harkened back to the match that Johnson had against Hollywood Hogan when the latter came back to WWE.

Does this mean we can see another match with the same setup when another top star is ready to fly off to Hollywood? Maybe Seth Rollins or Roman Reigns drag Cena back to the ring for one ultimate time and demean him for taking real wrestlers’ place for himself and then set off to the movies themselves? Only time will tell.
