It appears that Cena relished Punk’s eagerly anticipated comeback, and it’s possible that he overlooked the rather distant issues that formerly separated him and Punk. Of course, they had quite an intense rivalry in WWE over a decade ago.
An intense yet iconic rivalry of both bigwigs
The Chicago native had already startled the home audience once before; fans remember what happened in the same arena in 2011. It was arguably the greatest match in Punk’s wrestling career and one of the most iconic WWE matches ever.
In 2011 CM Punk’s contract with WWE was about to expire, and it was unclear if he would sign with them again. There was an additional clause added to the WWE Championship match between Punk and Cena, stating that CM Punk would depart the business with the title. The crowd was on fire and was chanting for the hometown hero from the very start of the Money in The Bank PLE. In that match, Punk defied the odds, hit Cena with a GTS, and was eventually able to leave the arena with the strap.

This led to another match, but this time a unification one between Cena and Punk at SummerSlam. And again, the climax favored the ‘Best in the World’ as he defeated Cena and became the Undisputed WWE champion.
