Standing up to one’s ideals is not an easy task. Especially when those ideals are preached primarily by your wrestling gimmick. However, John Cena appears to have no problem standing by what his in-ring character holds dear. During a magazine interview in 2022, The Champ came face-first to an interesting question. The interviewer asked him about the connection between his gimmick’s ideals and his personal life.
The WWE legend answered with all honesty and drew a bridge between his gimmick and real-life persona. Picking examples from his everyday life, Cena gave a witty reply to GQ Magazine.

John Cena draws a parallel between his gimmick and real-life
Often kayfabe characters can be completely opposite to a pro wrestler’s real personality. While that could be true in some cases when we’re talking about John Cena, the wrestler still stands beside the good values his wrestling character has. One such value is his popular catchphrase: “Hustle, loyalty, respect“, which he displayed proudly in WWE.

The interviewer asked him, “You’re one of the most positive and affirmative people I see on Twitter. It really seems to follow your original, in-character catchphrase in the WWE: hustle, loyalty, respect. How much of that plays into your everyday life?”
First, he started with the ‘hustle’ and ‘loyalty’ side of his real life. The Hollywood superstar said, “I mean, I would consider myself hard-working. And given this year will be my 20th anniversary with the WWE, I think one could also use the word ‘committed,’ or ‘loyal’.” Talking about the last remaining part of the catchphrase, the wrestler confessed, “I think “respect” is also a word that can define my human personality, as much as the fictional creation that bears my birth name.”
So, as a conclusion, John Cena added, “I think those are three safe words that you could clump together and say, Hey, this is who I am as a human being.”
John Cena doesn’t just talk about holding his ideals close. Instead, the wrestler has proved so through his actions too.

The one time John Cena displayed his ‘no days off’ attitude
Being a superstar in both Hollywood and WWE can often translate to John Cena having a packed schedule. So, having the ‘hustle’ part of his life active is crucial for the celebrity. Cena co-starred in ‘Hidden Strike’ alongside Jackie Chan. The Netflix original saw a successful opening on the audience’s home screens. Despite this, Cena didn’t want to take a day off.
Merely a few days later, Cena took to Instagram to promote another upcoming movie. This time, he shared a video game picture without any caption. The picture was foreshadowing his voice role in the upcoming ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’. During his WWE days, Cena was known for hardly taking time off and appeared and wrestled in almost every major event and weekly shows for WWE.
