This means that Cena is returning to the company on the day the 25-city summer tour starts.

Previously, Cena had confirmed he was returning to the company, but he hadn’t revealed a date for the same.

Cena wanted to come back or even appear at WrestleMania 37. Unfortunately, he was shooting in Vancouver at that time, and his schedule did not permit traveling back and forth, along with the mandatory quarantine time.

Regardless, he expressed how glad he is to see the company moving on with the younger talents and producing excellent shows, matches, and segments.

Since the COVID-19 induced global lockdown, WWE had shifted to relying on virtual viewership. Now, the company is restarting the tours and needs to give the WWE Universe a match they would want to see live.

Considering he’s returning on SmackDown, WWE will book him against the Universal Champion. Currently, it’s Roman Reigns, but Edge has returned to SmackDown as well, so there’s no saying who will be champion by the time July 16th, 2021 arrives.

Nevertheless, the company was planning to book the SummerSlam 2021 main event with an action-packed match – Roman Reigns vs. John Cena. If this is still the plan, Reigns will be champion for a while now.
