In a recent interview, former WWE Superstar CM Punk talked about one of his greatest matches in WWE. This was all the way back in 2011 when Punk was at his peak in the company. He was set to fight John Cena and defend his WWE Championship.

Punk recalls the insane atmosphere that he fought in and describes what made the night so special. The crowd was very responsive and played a major role in making this a legendary match.

“It makes your job a lot easier when you have that kind of an atmosphere right? Like I’ll always relate it to me and John Cena at Money in the Bank here in Chicago where it was just like- I could never have another match like that where the crow legitimately wanted me to win so bad so I probably thought John Cena was gonna walk away,” explains Punk.

CM Punk was just hours away from leaving WWE as per the storyline. He wanted to do so without losing his Championship. He wanted to go out with the throne.

Vince McMahon did not accept this and had John Cena be the final boss challenge before Punk. Moreover, the match was fought in Chicago which was the home of CM Punk. The fans there were enormously in support of Punk and cheered him on.

CM Punk delivered one of the finest performances that night

“Once the match started you could feel it. They literally had no idea, they didn’t know what was going to happen,” says Punk.

“When I was putting that together with John like this was the match I had in my head you know, I always had that in my pocket like, if you can get the people to lose themselves in the confusion of who’s going to win and next thing you know they go-‘man these guys can wrestle’, ‘man these guys have been wrestling 15 minutes’ and they just get lost in it and it’s just raw emotion. That kind of crowd, that kind of atmosphere is very rare,” concludes Punk.

CM Punk went on to win against John Cena after an interruption from Vince McMahon and then GM of Raw John Laurinaitis. McMahon tried ringing the bell early, like what he did in the Montreal Screwjob.

However, Cena stopped this, demanding that he wanted to win fair and square. Punk then caught an unsuspecting Cena and delivered a final Go to Sleep to him before getting the pinfall.

Punk then proceeded to escape the stadium through the crowds in one of the best PPV endings of all time. The home crowd cheered and celebrated as their icon left with the gold, a feat that very few have accomplished. CM Punk was the gladiator that survived.

Apart from Vince McMahon’s reaction as this happened, the crowd was phenomenal. There was a different swing to the air that night and CM Punk felt it. If there’s anything that can bring him back to WWE, its the fans.
