John Cena stands tall as a highly accomplished WWE star. In his WWE tenure, he has held many accolades and was the company’s poster boy for a decade. Among his long list of achievements with WWE, he held another impressive record that was under threat until recently.

On the December 16 edition of SmackDown, Cena announced he will return to in-ring action on the last SmackDown of the year. This will allow the Leader of Cenation to keep his streak intact of wrestling every year since his main roster debut in 2002.

John Cena will join an elite group

Ever since John Cena transitioned into Hollywood, his WWE appearances have been sporadic. The Franchise Player has become more of a part-time wrestler after having competed almost nonstop for over a decade in WWE. During his time with the company, Cena was one of the most dedicated performers, with him hardly taking any time off barring an injury.

The Doctor of Thuganomics has remarkably wrestled a match every year since his debut in 2002. That is two decades of active in-ring competition. A few weeks ago, it seemed Cena would end 2022 without a match, bringing an end to his impressive 20-year streak. But after he announced he will be Kevin Owens’ partner for his tag team match against the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn, the run is set to continue.

Cena’s legendary career of 20 years in WWE has led him to 16 World Championship victories, the joint most in pro wrestling alongside Ric Flair. His 20-year streak also sees him join the likes of The Undertaker, who wrestled for 30 years, and his iconic rival Randy Orton. The Viper has his own streak of having wrestled a match every year in WWE for the last 20 years and achieved this feat before Cena this year.

As such, Cena would be in rare company when he runs down to the ring on the next episode of SmackDown to compete. The tag team match with him and Kevin Owens taking on Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn before the new year will see him become part of an elite list.

It is hardly surprising to see two legends like John Cena and Randy Orton wrestle for 20 years and not miss a match in all these years. They were the cornerstones of the Ruthless Aggression Era. Both were the company’s top stars in their prime, and it is amazing to see that they are still going strong two decades after they first appeared on the scene.
