In WWE, the comparison between Roman Reigns and John Cena has existed for a long time. The similarities in their career trajectory and the push WWE gave both wrestlers cannot be denied. However, fans did not like WWE repeating the forced babyface route with Reigns. Cena never turned heel in his career and stayed a babyface throughout. Naturally, fans got tired of him. The same was on the verge of happening to Reigns until August 2020.

Returning to SummerSlam, Reigns dropped being a babyface and allied with Paul Heyman. In spite of all the speculations, his heel run did not end quickly, but that could change in the coming future.

The ‘Tribal Chief’ gimmick for Reigns is one of his best. After the SHIELD dissolved, Reigns got the babyface push. Despite being an imposing wrestler, he got pushed as the underdog. However, fans did not like this one bit.

In August 2020, he turned heel and the new arrogant and dominant persona got over immediately. Allying with The Usos and creating The Bloodline, he became the force WWE always wanted him to be. But according to pro wrestling veteran Jim Cornette, this all could change.

“So, it’s, you know, it’s gonna happen. It has to happen,” Cornette said on his Jim Cornette’s Drive-Thru podcast. The talk was about Reigns’ career now that The Bloodline is three years old.

“But it probably, it needs to happen because when you get so good at being bad, the people like it,” Cornette said. Similar to the babyface push WWE gave Reigns if this heel angle continues, people will eventually want to see a babyface Reigns. Cornette gave examples of Roddy Piper, Jerry Lawler, and Steve Austin.

The Bloodline storyline and Reigns’ heel turn is one of the best storylines of the new decade. It is a breath of fresh air with family drama, power struggles, and loyalty on the line. The heel turn also made Reigns a satisfying WWE Universal Champion, but after surpassing 1000 days as Champion, the end could be near.

Pro wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, via the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, also reported the talks of Reigns turning babyface by the end of his title reign. According to Meltzer, the storyline is the main focus of the WWE. The power struggle between Sikoa and Reigns would become the turning point, and Jey Uso’s loyalty would be the final nail in the coffin. This would turn Reigns into a superhero-styled babyface.

Even though Reigns’ massive heel run is fresh, the inevitable babyface will happen. Many speculate it could occur at a big event like SummerSlam or WrestleMania. This could also mean Reigns could go back to being the all-conquering super babyface like John Cena.

A betrayal by the family would be the obvious angle, as this would be a great conclusion to the entire storyline. A broken and beaten Reigns would go over faster with the fans after being presented as one of the most dominating wrestlers on the roster. Do you want to see Reigns turn heel anytime soon?
