Cody Rhodes returned to the Stamford-based company last year at WrestleMania, where gained his mojo right away. WWE pushing him as a WrestleMania main eventer from a mere mid-carder within a year caught the eyeballs of many.
That said, the former Stardust’s first WWE run is a far cry from his present status in the lore. The second-generation wrestler struggled to get a solid footing in the business, failing to rise to the main event scene. He was miles away from achieving his ultimate dream of winning the Championship belt. Combined with the creative differences he had been facing with WWE, Rhodes took his leave from the promotion in 2016.
With the aim of revitalizing his career, Rhodes dipped his feat in almost every other promotion, including National Wrestling Alliance, Ring of Honor, New Japan Pro Wrestling, TNA/Impact Wrestling, and, last but not least, AEW. He was able to score major success in the independent circuit and at AEW.
But despite some of these pragmatic gains, Rhodes was trauma-struck deep down and was still coming to terms with the unfamiliar world outside WWE. Financial challenges only added to the agony.
During an interview on The Dale Jr. Podcast, Rhodes recalled the initial phase of life outside WWE. He said, ”It was so personally scary, but it was my job. You know my dad had passed away at this point and I had kind of absorbed his role. It was so risky, like I joked with people all the time. I was actually one wrestler who was good with my money. I am going to be okay outside of WWE. That’s not true. Right? I was just like it was check to check and then checks were going to end. And now it’s indie payday. And all these different, you create these revenue streams and do these things. So it was very risky.”
Rhodes credited his wife, who took charge and became an abundant motivation source for her toppled husband. “God bless her. My wife just believed. Had she not believed, this wouldn’t have worked. She believed,” Rhodes said.
However, it’s not the first time Brandi Rhodes turned into a guardian angel for Cody Rhodes and the family.
Cody Rhodes owed his entire career to his wife
Brandi Rhodes retired from the ring earlier this year and pulled off the role of a perfect homemaker with grace ever since. Although she is currently planning a career transition through opening a yoga and pilates reformer studio in Atlanta, Georgia, her full-time role as a wife still wins the race.
Recently, the 38-year-old wrestler revealed that he owed his entire career to his wife. Rhodes admitted that his career wouldn’t have been if Brandi hadn’t been there with her constant support.
