When it comes to dream matches that never happened, there is one that fans always wanted, and the WWE even teased. This was the dream match between CM Punk and Stone Cold Steve Austin. The most controversial star of the modern era of the WWE taking on the most controversial star of the Attitude Era is a mouthwatering prospect. Fans have wanted this match for ages, and to this day, the WWE teases it.

With Punk back in the WWE and Austin performing against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38, fans believe this match could still occur.

CM Punk and Stone Cold Steve Austin, a dream match in the making

The first tease of this dream match came back in 2011. We got Punk and Austin face-to-face during a backstage segment on Monday Night RAW. Not only was this a heated exchange between two beloved stars, but Punk mocked Austin’s “What?” chant. These were the seeds the WWE planted for a tree that would never grow.

The next tease would be during the promotion of WWE’s 2K13 video game. The promo featured the two in their natural charming personas. Dripping with charisma and captivating the audience for what could be the feud of a lifetime, fans were hyped. However, it was all for the promotion of the game.

The main reason this has not happened yet is that Austin retired. The Texas Rattlesnake retired from active work in 2003. Due to severe neck injuries during his career, another match was off the table. However, after 19 years of recovery, he did step into the ring with Owens. This revived the hopes that he could be ready for the dream match after Punk returned.

Another reason fans are talking about this is due to the report from Fightful Select. They claimed that a source inside the WWE said that the creative heads have been pushing the dream match idea ever since Punk returned. However, whether this is real or kayfabe is yet to be seen.

Could Punk vs Austin really take place?

The answer is both a yes and no. While CM Punk and Austin could be a one-time thing like Austin vs Owens at WrestleMania, nothing is confirmed now. While The Second City Saint and The Texas Rattlesnake would have a fantastic verbal feud, no one knows if Austin has it in him for another match.

Since Punk has no feuds lined up and Maina season is in a few months, the Fightful Select report excites fans. However, WWE might consider pitting Punk against an active talent in order to usher in a storyline that resonates personally for all parties involved. Only time will tell if this potential storyline between the two wrestling legends could be real or kayfabe.
