The name CM Punk is synonymous with controversy in wrestling. Even though the infamous All Out incident besmirched the good name of CM Punk, he felt the adulation from the fans in Chicago when he made his much-awaited return. However, Punk soaked in a very negative response from Canadian fans at the Forbidden Door and Collision last week.

It’s a no-brainer that the Canadian fans loathe CM Punk given that Canada is the home country of Kenny Omega. Considering the discordance from the fans, WWE legend Bully Ray thinks AEW is giving CM Punk the “John Cena treatment” which will ultimately mean good for Punk’s career.

On July 17th, CM Punk made his groundbreaking return to the inaugural edition of AEW Collison. In a typical fashion, Punk cut a scathing promo reiterating “Tell me if I’m telling lies”. As noted, The response from his hometown was a far cry from the response he got in Canada. And WWE legend Bully Ray believes that CM Punk may very well become as big a star in AEW as John Cena was in WWE.

While speaking on The Busted Open Podcast, Bully Ray gave his take on CM Punk’s star power in AEW. According to him, he has the fans divided. While some love him for being unapologetically himself, others detest him due to his chequered past. WWE icon John Cena was also once in a vaguely similar spot during his heyday in WWE.

Citing the similarity, Bully Ray claimed that CM Punk is receiving the John Cena treatment from AEW. He said, “Punk right now is getting the Cena treatment. Whether they love you or whether they hate you, they have some kind of an emotional response to you. Now there’s a two-fold scenario going on with Punk: People who are going to want to see Punk and cheer him; people who are gonna buy tickets to see CM Punk and boo him. What’s the common denominator? Buy tickets.”

In actuality, CM Punk, today, is perceivably the most loved and hated star in wrestling. Moreover, he has always had his detractors, much like John Cena. At one point, John Cena sparked a loud negative reaction from the crowd, despite being the face of the company.

However, Cena never added fuel to a slow burn among his haters but the former AEW World Champion never fails to take a dig at his haters from time to time.

Right from the gate, Punk made his entrance by waving his hand around his ear, imitating Hulk Hogan’s iconic gesture. Furthermore, at some point during the match, Punk used Hogan’s iconic big boot and the leg drop.

It should be noted that CM Punk once called Hulk Hogan a “piece of sh*t” during an edition of the Rasslin with Brandon F Walker podcast.
