Do you recall the time before Cody Rhodes’ match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39? The American Nightmare rode a single sentiment as he prepared for his clash with The Tribal Chief. Rhodes, more than anything else, he was hellbent on ‘finishing his story’. It was the theme that dominated almost every promo that he cut before WrestleMania 39. Well, now he has had a change of heart.
Over three months later, Rhodes opened up about the catchphrase and the emotions it conjures upon hearing it now. Furthermore, it proves that change is the only constant.

Rhodes has a documentary coming out in a few days’ time. American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes will premiere on Peacock on July 31. Ahead of the release, Rhodes caught up with Sam Roberts of Notsam Wrestling for an interview. The interviewer asked him why he thought it was the perfect time for his story to come out.
Rhodes said that the current fans and talents might not know a lot about his past. Moreover, the documentary could act as a portal for them to learn about it. “That’s why I think now is the perfect time from the perspective of WWE because it really does inform everybody as to what all took place,” he said.
Rhodes then spoke about his comeback and how he was feted by Corey Graves, calling him from “undesirable to undeniable” and other encouraging words. While he enjoyed those, he also added, “Remember we were talking about finishing the story, which I now hate saying ‘it’s a meme’.“
Meanwhile, do you know what this story is about?
What is Cody Rhodes’ incomplete story and why is it important?
Much before Cody Rhodes attained stardom in the WWE or pro wrestling his family had two more wrestlers who gained fame. Rhodes’ father- Dusty Rhodes– is a WWE Hall of Famer and is considered to be one of the greatest pro wrestling minds of all time. Fondly known as The American Dream, Dusty’s passion rubbed off on his older son, Dustin.
Dustin joined the WWE and plied his trade as Goldust, managing to pull off an androgynous gimmick. While he now wrestles in the rival AEW, the WWE Universe admires Goldust. Even with their long association and tenures with the WWE, none of the Rhodes have ever once held the WWE Championship. This is the unfinished story that Cody wants to complete.

His fight against Reigns was based on it as The Big Dog held (still holds) the WWE Championship. Winning it from him would have given Rhodes the last piece to complete the puzzle.
As of now, Rhodes is not on a championship trail as he is set to lock horns with Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Following that, there is a possibility that Rhodes could start a feud with a 36-year-old superstar. So, for now, Cody Rhodes and his fans will have to wait for a while for the completion of the story.
