Hulk Hogan enjoyed a great deal of creative control in WCW, where he became the World Champion after forming the heel faction nWo. Hogan, often cited as being reluctant to put new guys over in the ring, made himself look strong, even after taking a loss. All this once terrified a guy who took on Hogan for the WCW World title.

After capturing his fourth WCW World title, Hollywood Hogan was the dominant force in the promotion as the leader of nWo Hollywood.

During the same time, WCW had found itself a new megastar in Goldberg. After making his debut, Goldberg went on an unprecedented winning streak. He would soon win the United States Championship and had his eyes set on the top prize.

WCW decisively booked Hogan vs Goldberg for the World Title in July 1998 on an episode of Nitro. Goldberg reveals how Hogan handled the situation after being booked to lose the top prize.

Goldberg was scared because of Hulk Hogan

In an interview with ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin on the Broken Skull Sessions, Goldberg said he was scared before the big match against Hogan. Apparently, the WCW World Champion just wanted to call the match in the ring.

Goldberg said, “I go into the room beforehand and I had to go through Hall first and he and I have never gotten along. I wanted to eat him more than anybody in the business. Then I had to go with Hogan and I’m scared sh*tless. I don’t know what’s going on. I just do whatever people tell me to do anyway and here I got Hogan.”

He further added, “I go in and say, ‘What are we doing?’ And he goes, ‘We’ll call it in the ring’ — you’re kidding me right?! So then we go [in the match] and lock up and [he’s got] Icy Hot all over him everywhere — hell yeah — I couldn’t see the whole freaking match. It is what it is, I deserved it — it’s all good.”

Hollywood Hogan versus Goldberg was one of the biggest matches in WCW history. And now the fans know it was called on the spot.

Goldberg ended Hogan’s reign in front of 45,000 people inside the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Whether the ‘Hulkster’ meant to spread Icy Hot all over Goldberg’s face is not clear, but apparently, it happened.

Goldberg vs Hogan was given away on Nitro

Many experts believed that this match should’ve been kept on a pay-per-view. The bout did great for WCW ratings-wise but it could’ve done huge numbers on a PPV.

WCW beat RAW in ratings that night but eventually lost the Monday Night War. Fans pointed out this as one of the missed opportunities by the Ted Turner promotion.
