Pro-wrestling is a lot more than just in-ring moves and technicalities. It is equally make-believe. Be it inside the squared circle, where pro wrestling stars are rated on their abilities to perform a set of moves as well as sell them credibly, or while cutting a promo during segments. Paul Heyman, who is regarded as one of the best talkers and managers in the business, delivered a heartfelt segment in 2018 that left even the host baffled.

Nearly five years later, Brock Lesnar’s former manager deconstructed his now famous segment, which took place amidst the kayfabe turbulence between Heyman and his 45-year-old client. Imagine surprising your host even during a kayfabe encounter, without making it look gimmicky. That is what Paul Heyman pulled off with former WWE employee Renee Paquette on August 6, 2018.

During the said episode of RAW, Heyman sat down with Paquette to discuss his future association with Lesnar. Just a week prior, The Beast Incarnate had cost Heyman his job by being uncooperative. To make matters worse, Lesnar manhandled his manager after Kurt Angle had fired the latter.

When Paquette asked him about Lesnar, Heyman looked at her with bloodshot eyes and it was evident that the man was crying. Admittedly, the host wasn’t aware of it and Heyman cried for real and reached out in his past to bring out the tears.

To evoke a strong emotion like loss, Heyman decided to don the same suit he had while bidding farewell to his father after the latter’s death. The method worked. “I’m bawling, I’m weeping. I’m openly crying. I get into the chair and I keep my head down because if she happens to glance at my direction, I want this to be shocking to her. I want to capture that shock,” he said on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast.

The 57-year-old spoke about Lesnar’s incommunicado status and left the host speechless with his take on Lesnar’s temperament. He spoke about The Beast Incarnate’s increased violence and even said there was no chance that Roman Reigns, who emerged as Lesnar’s challenger for the Universal Championship, would win during their encounter.

Meanwhile, in reality, the two are good friends and Heyman shared several stories of their bond.

Paul Heyman lost his mother, Sulamita, to cancer in 2009. Lesnar, who is one of the 57-year-old’s closest friends, was there beside him during the time. He also told Rubin about finding out their respective girlfriends had conceived at the same time. Heyman said it was an emotional moment.

He has been associated with Lesnar since the latter’s early days in the main roster in 2002. While Heyman has found success with Reigns in the recent past, his work with the 45-year-old former champion is well-loved by the WWE Universe.
