No matter what you do in life, or what level of success you attain, you must undergo some grinding moments to get the flower. The 16-time WWE World Champion John Cena isn’t an exception. The Cenation leader too had his fair share of hardships before his wrestling career took a fairy tale turn. Cena carried the company on his back during the PG era. He established himself as the ultimate face of the world’s biggest wrestling promotion.
Even now, after being fully invested in his Hollywood endeavor, fans often wish to have him in the ring more. But it cost a lot to earn this spot of the fan-favorite Super Cena from a bland babyface in the company. The former world champion had a stuttering start during his initial days in the company back in 2002. He completely lost momentum, to say the least. It went up to so extreme that WWE almost fired him in the very first year of his main roster debut.

Thankfully, it didn’t materialize that way. Cena raised his game and soon won over the fans and the WWE higher ups to carve a place on the main roster. But his early days were full of struggle where he failed to get over the crowd as a rather bland babyface. He even lost his nickname ‘The Prototype’ he used during his OVW days.
Speaking to Sam Roberts of Nostam Wrestling, the star recalled that tough time and termed it the ‘scariest moment of his entire career. Detailing his experience, Cena noted, ”So, you know, that started my career, the Ruthless Aggression Era that everyone now romanticizes, which we so often do with the past, like it was great. It sucked for me. I had no direction. I was asked to be a good guy when I got my experience as a bad guy. So I was asked to do something new. I lost my nickname. I had my real name. So, what is a John Cena? I don’t know what that is.”
” I was too stupid to realize that, like, … I could use the two words ‘ruthless’ and ‘aggression’ and create a personality. I wish I could get that opportunity now because I do a lot more with it. But I squandered it.” the 46-year-old added.
He later revealed that being this position was his “scariest moment”.
However, it was a European tour that ultimately came to his safe and paved the way for him to become the most notable stars in later years.
John Cena escaped WWE release in the past
Cena’s mixed early run on the roster led him to receiving an ultimatum from Vince McMahon’s company. Cena was on his final overseas tour in the UK when WWE informed him that they would like to let him go because he wasn’t bringing much to the table.
But surprisingly, WWE’s perfect ambassador of the Ruthless Aggression era doesn’t have any slightest hard feelings for that. Rather, he appreciated how nicely WWE treated him at that time. They were about to give him money and some more tours as compensation.

Currently, after his last big defeat at the hands of Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39, it seems like Cena’s WWE career is slowly approaching the end. But before he hangs up the boots for good, a grand retirement match is what fans widely expect to see.
Now, only time will say what next will await Cena inside the squared circle regardless of the speculation and discussion.
