Being such an enormous figure in the 2010s WWE, everyone was excited to see CM Punk back on their TVs. His return came with a lot of fans moving over to AEW. For Tony Khan, the CEO of the company, this was the best thing that could’ve happened when signing CM Punk. But neither Khan nor the fans could have expected the AEW media scrum after All Out 2022.

Not only did Punk’s comments about the company derail fans’ love for him, but he put Khan in an uncomfortable position as well. But after much discussion, Khan revealed that Punk will be returning to AEW, at the premiere of their new show, AEW Collision, just hours from now. Being the head of the company, it was especially uncomfortable for Khan to hear complaints about his employees and EVPs. The former AEW World Champion revealed that he apologized for everything that happened.

Punk said, “I was just looking for something to be done and nothing got done. So, if you want something done right, you got to do it yourself. And I just didn’t approach it in the right manner, but the tension was high. I pretty much knew that I had just injured myself again. I was hurt, and I was disappointed. Yeah, it’s very easy for me to say I regret that and I handled it the wrong way, 100%.

So, you might be wondering what did Punk do so wrong that he apologized for it publicly. Well, the media scrum after AEW All Out 2023 is a big bundle to unpack, so let’s get to it.

Last year’s AEW media scrum

Known for his abrasive honesty to the fans, the media scrum where Punk revealed the damaged parts of AEW was not out of character for him. First, Punk talked about Hangman Adam Page’s ability and nearly wasting a great experience for millions of fans. Then, he dragged his old real-life feud with Colt Cabana, whose history with Punk is extensive, while Cabana was a part of AEW as well.

Last but certainly the moment that erupted massively was when Punk talked about the EVPs. Here he was mainly referring to Kenny Omega and Young Bucks. His comments led to a brawl between The Elite and Punk backstage. The backstage brawl forced Tony Khan to suspend both parties involved in it.
