WWE presented Ronda Rousey as a babyface when she came to the company in 2018 despite her ‘Baddest Woman on the Planet’ moniker in UFC. Rousey lived up to her nickname in UFC. She used to trash-talk her opponents before the fight and then backed it up inside the octagon. WWE went with a different route since they wanted a global star such as her to be a face.

However, this hasn’t gone over quite well with the fans and the WWE seems to realize it. They are looking to make amends with the former UFC Champion herself embracing the new role as a heel.

Fans didn’t receive Ronda Rousey’s last run as the babyface champion quite well. Many fans believe Rousey is a natural heel and her face gimmick feels forced. Although WWE has had her do ‘heel-ish’ things every now and then, she hasn’t been given the freedom to fully explore the character. But after her recent title win at Extreme Rules, things might be changing.

Last week on SmackDown Rousey addressed the WWE fans and had a lot to say to them which blurred the lines between kayfabe and reality.

Ronda Rousey said she owes the fans nothing

Ever since Ronda Rousey had a steady run in WWE, it has divided the fans. They have appreciated how well she has adjusted from the octagon to the squared circle, but her persona does not impress them. A ruthless UFC fighter presented as an all-pleasing babyface isn’t exactly what fans expect from Rousey. They want a more mean streak and they might get one.

Rousey has shown heel characteristics before with a meaner persona, but WWE may be going all in on it this time. During the October 21 edition of SmackDown, Kayla Braxton asked the new SmackDown Women’s Champion if she will issue an open challenge like she used to during her previous reign as champion. The 2022 Royal Rumble winner said she issues the open challenge to prove that she is the best and not for the WWE fans. She also said that she owes the fans nothing.

Rousey said, “I issue open challenges to prove I’m the best, not to entertain the WWE Universe. I owe them nothing, okay? I gave them everything that I had, and I got nothing but hate for it. If I kept chasing their approval after all of that, how pathetic does that make me? No, I didn’t come back for them and I don’t win for them.”

Moreover, she attacked the fans for wanting their favorites to win. ‘The Rowdy One’ continued, “I ripped this title off the Glitter Cinderella despite them, because they don’t want the best to win, they want their favorites to win. Well, now they’re stuck with the best.” This promo blurred the kayfabe a little since she has been chasing the universal approval of the fans in WWE to no avail.

It seems Rousey is at home playing the bad guy or girl in this case. Last week, she also ripped a fan sign after defeating Liv Morgan at the Saturday Night’s Main Event show.
