In a recent interview with AP news, The Franchise Player got candid about his role in the narrative of the company. Many fans assume that a superstar, such as Cena, would get to pick his own battles. However, the Hollywood actor insisted that he never meddles with the creative aspect and leaves it to the writers. But, what he does is give the audience what they want.
Cena explained, “I don’t pick opponents, but I love to tell stories. I didn’t pick Austin Theory but I certainly spoke from the heart (on RAW).”
Therefore, his rivalry with Theory was completely the choice of WWE, and not up to any of the stars involved. In fact, the WWE superstar confessed to never picking his opponents.
In the same interview, Cena explained that he never dictates the direction behind the scenes. Instead, he focuses on his own presentation and performance.

In the interview, Cena said, “I just try and do what I’m told to do and do it to the best of my abilities. Instead of dictating my terms, I often just try to make the performance the best it can be. What I don’t do and what I’ve never done is curate the direction of the narrative.”
Therefore, he puts his heart and soul into delivering a memorable performance, such as this emotional speech, to accept Theory’s challenge on RAW.
The Peacemaker star certainly didn’t forget how to work an audience. Ever since his debut back in 2002, John Cena never failed to resonate with fans. His unique style on the mic and his signature moves are, frankly, inimitable.
