Even during his tenure at AEW, ‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes expressed a desire to go back to the WWE. As one of the stars who kick-started AEW in 2019, Rhodes soared as a top name during the company’s launch. Yet, three years later, he shocked the wrestling world by becoming the hottest free agent in pro wrestling.
But WWE wasted no time seizing the opportunity, quickly bringing Rhodes back to the company. The American Nightmare’s triumphant return at WrestleMania 38, as the mystery opponent for Seth Rollins, sent shockwaves through the WWE Universe.
In “American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes,” the ex-AEW sensation revealed his inner certainty: WWE’s loving embrace would eternally be the road leading him back home. At a screening event with Uproxx Sports for the documentary, he said- “It’s like I knew I’d be back,” “When we did All In, I remember telling them I want to have signs backstage to tell you where the rooms are, and I want to have catering, and we’re going over all this.
He later also stated- I wanted to replicate a WWE event, or at least the production side of it. Maybe had I looked further in at that point, I would have realized that I was starting on a path even then to getting back.”
The American Nightmare’s journey came full circle as he embraced his destiny with WWE. From becoming AEW’s star to his sensational return to WWE, Cody Rhodes’ path to greatness was written in the stars.
