Last year, one of WWE’s greatest wrestlers The Undertaker caused much furor when he called the current generation of the company’s stars soft. He said that the product has changed a lot since his days and there is not enough substance. Naturally, his comment drew attention from all sides, with the current WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns taking an exception to the views of ‘The Phenom’. And now another WWE legend has lashed out at the current crop of wrestlers for a specific reason.

Wrestling has definitely evolved over time, with contrasting styles on display these days. Modern-day wrestlers excite the fans by performing a plethora of new moves in the ring, false finishes, and some high-flying action. But it seems WWE Hall of Famer Jake The Snake Roberts isn’t a fan of one aspect of modern-day wrestling.

Jake Roberts is an old-school performer who made a career out of understanding and applying in-ring psychology. Roberts, like many of his peers, has seen wrestling evolve over the years. There was a time when kicking out of a finisher was a rarity, and today wrestlers hit each other with multiple finishers during the match. This does add a level of excitement and unpredictability to the action, but not everyone is a fan of this style of telling a story.

Speaking on his The Snake Pit podcast, Roberts said that he doesn’t like to see wrestlers perform a number of spectacular moves only to have the opponent kick out and then lose to a ‘schoolboy’ roll up. He said, “What kills me is they’ll go out and do all these horrible f*** crazy unbelievable spectacular moves and nobody gets beat by one of them. But they get beat by the most vicious hold in wrestling, the schoolboy. I hate that.”

Roberts said that the lack of selling was disrespectful and that was his only gripe with today’s wrestlers. He continued, “Have some respect for your fellow combatant and go out there and sell a little bit. That’s my only b** with these young guys. They don’t sell s***.” So far, none of the current generation wrestling stars have responded to these comments by Jake Roberts.

Wrestlers often try to impress the audience with different skills and actions. The in-ring action has changed by leaps and bounds from where it was 20-30 years ago. Some of the elements, such use of more risky moves and unique offenses, excite the fans but certain aspects of it do come under scrutiny from time to time.
