Dwayne Johnson has been seen as a franchise reviver for many years with his charismatic personality and popularity bringing immense success to a film at the box office and reviving the brand’s fortunes. This was the hope when Warner Bros. roped in The Rock to portray DC’s Black Adam on the big screen. However, things didn’t turn out to be exactly as both studios and The Brahma Bull had wished and the movie fell short of expectations at the box office.

Speaking with Variety at the Academy Awards on Sunday night, the interviewer brought up his history with Black Adam and DC. The Rock then used a football reference to take a sly dig at the new management.

Dwayne Johnson said they tried to deliver the best movie with Black Adam

Although the movie did good numbers at the box office, it failed to hit the mark expected of a comic book movie in this day and age making it a rare disappointment for DJ. Afterward, there was also a drawn-out saga with DC studios’ new management which eventually led to his departure from the franchise.

During the 95th Oscar awards, The Rock had a brief chat with Variety where the subject of Black Adam popped up again and how things went for the anti-superhero flick. The Rock said, “All that I could do and that we could do when we were making Black Adam was put our best foot forward and surround ourselves with the best people and also, deliver the best movie we could. Our audience score was in the 90s. Critics took a couple of shots. That’s just the business of it, though.”

He then took a subtle dig at the change in management in DC studios with a football reference. DJ mentioned Henry Cavill’s Superman exit and his own departure and said, “But I think it’s like when you have a pro football team and your quarterback wins championships, the head coach wins championships and you have a new owner. The new owner comes in ‘not my coach, not my quarterback, I gonna go with somebody new.”‘

The new management of James Gunn and Peter Safran in DC led to certain changes within the studio as the slate was wiped clean with a bunch of new movies announced for the first chapter of the new DC era.

It would appear that The Rock and the studios didn’t see eye to eye as evidenced by his new owner reference. Despite being a popular star, DJ’s relationship with Warner Bros was strained after the release of Black Adam, and the writing appeared to be on the wall.
