Brock Lesnar has had some memorable matches over the years in WWE and is currently involved in a heated feud with Bobby Lashley. One of his early classics was his WrestleMania 19 WWE Championship match against Kurt Angle. The match saw a back and forth encounter between two exceptional talents, with Lesnar coming out on top. Angle recently talked about his match with ‘The Beast’ in 2003 and recalled how their title match almost didn’t take place on the grand stage.

At WrestleMania 19, Lesnar beat the reigning WWE champion, Kurt Angle. The match is still recalled fondly by many fans. However, something that not everybody knows is that the title fight almost ended up being canceled. During his podcast, the WWE Hall of Famer revealed the real reason behind the same.

It was all connected to the build up between Lesnar and Angle.  Despite having not wrestled much against each other, the two stars needed much practice. Their in-ring chemistry was as strong as anything. So, Vince McMahon didn’t put in much effort to make the two collide unless an event required them to.  Speaking on his The Kurt Angle Show podcast, he said, “we didn’t need practice. I think it was done on purpose. I don’t think Vince [McMahon] wanted us to face each other much up until then.”

Since he already had a fight scheduled with Brock Lesnar ahead of their big WrestleMania fight, things got a little problematic. Due to his broken neck, Angle was recommended to get the surgery done before he could wrestle again. He continued, “I broke my neck at ‘No Way Out’ and then I ended up having to wrestle Brock a SmackDown before WrestleMania.” However, Angle did not want to drop the title on a SmackDown show before WrestleMania. He added, “Brock could have the title, somebody else would face him at WrestleMania and I could have my surgery.

Things could have been really different had Angle agreed to drop the title to Lesnar before WrestleMania 19. ‘The Beast Incarnate’ could’ve faced some other opponent on that night and we would’ve never gotten to see the classic between Angle and Lesnar. Still, things worked out in the end and Angle’s comments adds another layer to their fantastic bout nearly 20 years ago.
