The grace of professional wrestling has been marred by a lot of controversies over the years. One of those infamous incidents loomed large when The Iron Sheik was asked to break Hulk Hogan‘s leg with a big paycheck due to a specific reason. Hulk Hogan made a name for himself as the poster boy of WWE as he helped the company reach unprecedented heights. But his move to WWE didn’t come without controversy.

Hogan had a gentleman’s agreement with AWA and he was one of their biggest stars before he breached that agreement and jumped ship to WWE.

When Hulk Hogan went away from the American Wrestling Association, it didn’t sit well with owner Verne Gagne. He was so mad and frustrated that he didn’t even think twice about making Hogan pay back in a nasty way.

During the early 1980s, the Hulkster already established himself as a formidable force in the mix. Nailing a host of matches, Hogan quickly rose to fame in AWA. But Vince McMahon Jr. lurked him back to WWE with a sound offer. Hogan then made up his mind about reverting to his old wrestling home and it almost caused a derailment of his entire career in the hands of Verne Gagne. Hogan was going to face The Iron Sheik in WWE and that is when Gagne allegedly planned his move.

Spilling a conversation between him and The Iron Sheik that spoke loudly about Gagne’s revenge plan, the 70-year-old recalled,  ”Verne offers him a hundred grand to break my leg. He told afterward you know Verne called me and went to give me 100 grand to break your leg. But I am a businessman I just hope we can keep working. I said brother don’t worry we are going to work here all the time.”

However, despite Hogan’s revelation, it seems like Gagne’s son is still not convinced by this story.

Verne Gagne’s son blatantly dismissed the allegation against his father

The controversy lit a fire in the wrestling world back then and it marked a black spot in Verne Gagne’s professional reputation. That said, his son doesn’t believe so. Greg Gagne, 74, possessed a different view about his father.

Denying every bit of allegation, he straightaway claimed Verne didn’t do this at all. Rather, the entire story is purposefully made up to malign his image.

While the actual story is a mystery, it will remain so as well for the rest of the time as The Iron Sheik, one of the key potential fogs clearers of this debate isn’t here anymore to counter Greg Gagne.
