On July 9th, 2000, WCW’s Bash at the Beach took place. Hulk Hogan was going to face Jeff Jarrett at the event for his World title. This idea was put forward by one of the bookers of the promotion: Vince Russo. However, losing to Jarrett didn’t seem right to Hogan. This eventually led to a dispute between the wrestler and the former WCW booker.
Seeing Hogan’s creative influence and his refusal of losing to Jarrett, Russo had to reside to a different plan. He asked Jarrett to go and lay down in the ring. Jarrett unhesitantly repeated the instructions in the ring once the main event started.
Upon witnessing the odd sight, Hogan was confused. The WWE Hall of Famer quickly pulled himself out of the confusion and stepped on the title holder to finally win the championship from him. After completing his task, Hogan took the mic and said, “That’s why this company is in the damn shape it’s in, because of bullsh*t like this!” Russo’s retaliation to Hogan’s comment seemed to generate a problem that built up further.
The former booker promised fans that would be the last time they will be seeing Hogan in the promotion. This resulted in a different level of chaos. Later, Russo also reversed the title decision. So Jarrett ended up keeping his championship to himself, losing it to Booker T later that night.
Hogan was “predicting trouble” that night and couldn’t risk himself getting hurt. Hogan said, “I don’t know if some of the boys might run out there.”
As a result, he hid ‘blades’, covering them with his ‘gimmick’. “So I’ve got my gimmicks on me, I got the half-inch sword, the quarter-inch sword, the two-inch sword you know, can go anywhere from 10 stitches to 500 stitches, depending how bad I wanna pull it,” said Hogan.

The former wrestler revealed more about the blades while talking further, “I keep two in my mouth and one on my wrist. So I’m just being cool about this thing, but I’m not an idiot. I’m covering my a**.” Hogan was wary that the situation could turn ugly any time. His refusal to lose to Jarrett could’ve seen other wrestlers turn against him for real which could have led to unpleasant scenes. Hence, Hogan was prepared for anything.
Hulk Hogan has been caught in several controversies throughout his wrestling career. However, this one stands out because Hogan left WCW following the controversy and did not make a return.
