Hulk Hogan’s rise to superstardom in pro wrestling was due to many reasons. WWE wanted to change the landscape of the industry and put Hogan at the forefront. His popularity with fans grew, owing to his charisma and physique. Hogan’s well-cut body played a crucial role in him getting over the side of the crowd. However, many allegations were made about Hogan for using steroids to keep up his muscular appearance. In fact, ‘The Hulkster’ himself confessed to substance abuse when he was starting out as a pro wrestler.

Despite being an immensely popular star, the dark cloud of steroid use remained over Hogan. His impressive feats of strength and a body that rivaled many bodybuilders at that time were tainted with allegations of using illegal substances.
In an interview in 2013, Hogan explained the perception around steroids during his era. He revealed how it was common practice to use them decades ago.
Hulk Hogan detailed the mindset around steroid use in the ’70s and ’80s
Hulk Hogan was an ideal wrestling role model in the 1980s. His jacked physique and ‘Real American’ character made him a fan favorite. However, he has also had his critics. His body, in particular, has been subject to scrutiny whether it was all natural or did ‘The Immortal One’ indulge in other things. Although he initially denied taking any steroids, he later confessed to using them.
In an interview on Rover’s Morning Glory show in 2013, Hogan talked about the mindset around steroid use when he was wrestling. Hogan explained, “It was kind of a wave of what was the correct thing to do at the time. [In the] ’70s, 80′s, doctors would write you a prescription for a steroid, where every sport in the world was doing it and the mindset was, ‘it was safer than taking sugar.’
Moreover, he added that this mindset changed when the steroid use became illegal and everyone knew that steroids were for injuries and medicinal purposes. He said, “I think the mindset changed around ’90 when it became illegal. It made everyone go ‘Whoa, if you wanna keep doing it, you’re going to be a felon.'”

Hogan also claimed that during his era, steroid use was more common across all sports than it is today.
Although Hogan’s presentation as a super strong, well-built wrestler was instrumental in his success, it would be a disservice to him to say that this was the sole reason for his stardom. Hogan had charisma and could tell a story in the ring which fans loved to see.
He played the top babyface role for years and also shone as the most hated heel with the nWo. There was more to Hogan than his 24-inch pistons and he proved it throughout his career.
