There’s no denying that Hulk Hogan is one of the biggest icons in wrestling history. His influence seeps into every big guy running different promotions even to this day. But it’s a little shocking seeing both WWE and AEW’s top stars pay tribute to the former WWE champion.

With his accolades and championships, also comes his flurry of controversies. But after apologizing for most of them and reconnecting with most of his old friends, Hogan’s legacy seems to be remembered more for his iconic run in WWE than his mistakes outside of the ring.

One fan noticed a striking similarity between WWE’s SummerSlam and AEW’s Collision, which both took place on Saturday night. Both matches had the heel wrestler deliver the iconic Hogan leg drop. In the opening bout of SummerSlam, between Logan Paul and Ricochet, Paul delivered his version of Hogan’s leg drop.

On Collision, CM Punk also delivered a leg drop in Hogan fashion to his opponent, Ricky Starks. Both the wrestlers also imitated the iconic popping ear for cheers taunt that Hogan used to display back in his golden era in WWE. Paul even went a step ahead with showcasing his biceps in a similar fashion to Hogan’s 24-pythons taunt.

It was truly a night to celebrate if you were a Hogan fan. But the question still remains about why the two wrestlers gave tributes to Hogan in their respective matches.

One possibility of this move being recreated by both wrestlers is because of the storyline. Both Paul and Punk are being mocked and demeaned by their respective promotion’s fanbase. Whether online or offline, both top stars are facing major backlash even despite their higher star value than the rest of the roster.

Hogan, especially during his time after reaching his peak in the 80s and 90s, was a controversial wrestler. Even as recent as the last decade, there were reports of Hogan doing something controversial. This sidelined a lot of his accomplishments. Moreover, the wrestling community’s fascination with him drastically diminished compared to his image in the golden era of wrestling. Maybe Paul and Punk were imitating this aspect of their characters through one move.
