The wrestling world is not new to weird ways of venting out frustration between rivals, but what Sgt Slaughter did to Hulk Hogan WWE crossed all boundaries.

WWE pitched Sgt Slaughter as a heel, destroying his patriotic image ahead of his WrestleMania 7 main event match against Hulk Hogan. The storyline had Hogan up in support of the United States. The dynamic between the rivals made perfect sense at the time.

1991 was a milestone year for Slaughter. He clinched the coveted WWE Championship title, knocking down the Ultimate Warrior at the Royal Rumble ahead of his controversial feud with Hogan. The former patriotic US sergeant who fought during the Vietnam War went so extreme in his character that he didn’t even hesitate to launch an insult to the American sentiment in the form of burning Hogan’s shirt and posters.

Hulk Hogan recalled Sgt. Slaughter’s hateful act ahead of their WrestleMania bout:

Hogan still couldn’t get over the humiliation he received from the Hall of Famer at that time. Describing the height of extremity Slaughter reached, Hogan noted during one of his past interviews, ”There aren’t many role models or heroes in today’s world that you can look up to but this image of Hulk Hogan man is unbelievable so when all these little kids see somebody like sergeant slaughter who has a choice, do I want to wrestle as a good guy or bad guy or what type of character do I want to be and he decides to go that far to burn a poster of Hulk Hogan a T-shirt or whatever the little hulksters they look at this thing like he’s burning the red white and blue men you know,”

”You know that’s like putting fire I mean fuel on the fire because not only is he going to step in there with Hulk Hogan, he’s going to step in there with a whole American nation… and he can’t beat that,” Hogan added.

Not only did his WrestleMania match with Hogan turn into a flop, but his last run with the company followed a similar pattern.

Sgt. Slaughter’s return to WWE was a major flop

Slaughter couldn’t sustain any momentum as a heel and turned face shortly after. But that also didn’t help him to cope with the sudden wave of change in the company and he had to depart in 1994.

The return of some notable released stars is one of the most common scenes we often get to see in WWE. Wrestlers ain’t comfortable being away from the ring for long and eventually, they return to their roots. Most of the time, their return turns out to be a grand success too.

But Slaughter is a complete exception in this case. He came back to the Stamford-based company in 1997 after 3 years of his departure. After an initial rough deal with D Generation X, the retired wrestler sided with McMahon to manipulate his power. Still, the move didn’t generate any positive momentum and turned out to be disastrous for all parties. In brief, his last run with the company was nothing but poor and arguably didn’t have to happen at all.
