The 2021 Royal Rumble is finally underway and we’ve already got new champions to talk about! Charlotte Flair and Asuka unsuccessfully defended the Women’s Tag Team Championships against former champions Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler on the kick-off show.
Charlotte Flair and Asuka lose Women’s Tag Team Championships at Royal Rumble
Royal Rumble 2021 kicked off with some exciting Tag Team action. Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler looked to regain the Women’s Tag Team Championships they lost at the WWE TLC PPV last month, and they did, but there were an extra pair of hands that helped them do that!

Honestly, it didn’t seem like Charlotte and Asuka would drop the titles so soon, but when you think about it, there is a bigger picture and also a hint. ‘The Queen’ and ‘The Empress of Tomorrow’ looked like they would keep the championships until the ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair sent all these plans for a toss.

Things were in control for the Women’s Tag Team Champions just when Ric Flair came down to the ring alongside Lacey Evans. Ric and Lacey’s closeness over the past few weeks has brought a wedge between him and his daughter, Charlotte. It showed when he cost his daughter the titles.
Charlotte Flair locked Shayna Baszler in the Figure Eight Submission move, but Nia Jax distracted the referee, allowing Lacey Evans to pull Charlotte’s hand away as she went to add extra pressure on Baszler’s leg.

The distraction from Ric Flair and Lacey Evans allowed Jax and Baszler to pick up the victory and their second Women’s Tag Team Championship. Seems like there are two ways WWE will go forward from here. First, Charlotte Flair vs Lacey Evans program at WrestleMania or Charlotte vs Asuka II.
What’s next for ‘The Queen?’
If Lacey vs Charlotte is not the plan, then Charlotte vs Asuka II definitely can be. Charlotte Flair could be the first woman to win consecutive Royal Rumble matches and challenge Asuka for the Raw Women’s Championship.

Both women put on a stellar performance at WrestleMania 34, and a rematch this year won’t be any different. If WWE’s plan is for Charlotte to go after Asuka, then it makes sense for her to drop the title like that.
