Ric Flair, a WWE and wrestling icon, is considered by many to be one of the best professional wrestlers in history. He is famous for holding the record for the most world title reigns, which he shares with John Cena. Flair is now retired and dealing with health issues, but he established and shattered numerous records during his peak.

The Nature Boy would also break a record nearly three decades ago when he became one of the first American pro wrestlers to enter North Korea and fight a match there. Flair would have a tough-fought battle against Japanese wrestling legend, Antonio Inoki. Inoki is one of the greatest in-ring performers, alas we lost the legend last year, and Flair even penned down a heartfelt note for him.

Flair recently appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast and spoke about his time in North Korea, and what he faced there. However, Rogan would be intrigued by Flair’s decision of visiting the closed-off country, and what motivated him.

The 16-times-World Champion revealed that he was not always the first choice to visit North Korea. And instead, Hulk Hogan was the initial choice to visit North Korea to face Inoki, however, Hogan would refuse the offer, and it was passed down to Flair.

What made Ric Flair accept the offer to visit North Korea for a wrestling match?

In 1995, The Nature Boy Ric Flair visited North Korea to promote goodwill and fought Japanese legend, Antonio Inoki. However, during the podcast, Joe Rogan would be shocked by Flair’s decision of visiting North Korea. Rogan asked, “How’d they talk you in doing that? “

He claimed that a promoter in WCW brought in the opportunity and wanted a performer for the event. He claimed that the promoter had hyped up the event to be extremely famous and make Flair even more popular. These factors influenced Flair to take up the opportunity and visit North Korea for the event.

However, the decision did not turn out extremely profitable for him, as he would later face troubles from the authority when they compelled him to say a speech, hailing North Korea. However, Flair would not do so, and instead, make another speech on its borderlines.

Both Ric Flair and Antonio Inoki are two of the greatest names in the wrestling world and have left a huge impact on the industry. While the world lost Inoki last year, Flair is also struggling with his health, and we wish him all the best for his health.
